Siege of Kanegasaki
The Siege of Kanegasaki was a 1570 battle between the Asakura clan, who sought to protect their domain, and the forces of Oda Nobunaga, who claimed them to be rebels for ignoring a summons from shōgun Ashikaga Yoshiaki. It is part of Nobunaga's larger campaign that sought to reunite Japan during the Sengoku period.
In 1570, Nobunaga sent an invitation to local warlords for a reception in Kyoto on the behalf of shōgun Yoshiaki, though this invitation also served as a test to check who would accept his authority. Echizen Province's daimyō Asakura Yoshikage refused the summons,[1] which Nobunaga argued was an offense to both the shōgun and Emperor Ōgimachi[2] and launched a campaign to besiege the Asakura's main stronghold of Kanegasaki Castle.[1]
Because the Asakura clan had a multi-generational alliance relationship with the Azai clan, Nobunaga's brother-in-law Azai Nagamasa felt obligated to aid the Asakura and attacked Nobunaga's army from its flank, forcing Nobunaga to stop the siege and retreat while a rear guard held off the combined Azai-Asakura forces. Feeling personally betrayed by a man he considered family, Oda fought the Azai-Asakura forces months later in the Battle of Anegawa, which ended in a resounding victory for his side.[1]
