History
High Middle Ages
- "Do you have anything to teach us, or will you lead us all to ruin?"
- ―Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, regarding the Apple.[src]
By the Third Crusade, ten Templars had found the Apple, which remained hidden in the catacombs of Solomon's Temple.[3]
Some time afterwards, in 1191, the Templar Grand Master Robert de Sable sought to take the Apple for himself. Discovering this, Al Mualim sent three of his Assassins to intercept him.[3]
Despite suffering a grievous injury, Malik Al-Sayf was able to retrieve the Apple, and bring it to Al Mualim. Throughout the year, Al Mualim kept the Apple close at all times, meanwhile sending Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad to kill Robert, and the other eight Templars who knew of the Apple.[3]

During Altaïr's absence, Al Mualim hypnotized the Assassins and villagers of Masyaf, using the power of the Apple. When Al Mualim was confronted by Altaïr after his return, Al Mualim utilized several of the Apple abilities to defend himself.[3]
However, Altaïr was able to kill Al Mualim and take the Apple.[3] Altaïr studied the Apple throughout most of his life, using it to advance the Assassin Order, and create new weapons hundreds of years ahead of their time.[2]
Altaïr finally sealed the Apple away in the library underneath Masyaf during the Mongol attack on Masyaf, before passing away in the library. Having used a set of Memory Seals, which were later named Masyaf keys, to lock the library, Altaïr made sure that the library's existence remained a secret to most, and had told the other Assassins to make people believe he had taken the Apple to Cyprus.[5] The keys to the library were given to Niccolò and Maffeo Polo, who hid them in their home of Constantinople.[6]
Renaissance
During the early 16th century, the Italian Assassin and a Mentor in the Assassin Order, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, began a journey to Masyaf, hoping to find the secret that was hidden there.[5]
Eventually finding the library, and retrieving Niccolò Polo's journal from a Templar captain called Leandros, who was trying to get into the library as well, Ezio made his way to Constantinople to retrieve the keys and unlock the library. After several months of searching, aided by the local Assassins Guild and Sofia Sorto, Ezio was able to obtain the keys and together with Sofia made his way to Masyaf once again.[5]
Entering the library, Ezio found out that the secret was another Apple, but decided to not take it from its pedestal, instead leaving the artifact in the library.[5]
Elizabethan era
Somehow, the Apple wound up in the hands of Queen Elizabeth I of England,[2] an important monarch in 16th century England who succeeded her sister Mary I and reversed her reestablishment of the Roman Catholic Church in England. It is unknown how or where she acquired the Second Apple, although it's possible, even likely, that it was handed down through the line of monarchs before her.
Modern Times
What is known that it would eventually pass into the hands of Mahatma Gandhi,[2] who presumably used it to acquire a large religious following in India during the early 20th century. However, the Templars learned that he had the Second Apple, so they had him murdered on 30 January 1948, so they could recover it.[2]
By 1963, the Templars had both the First and Second Apples, and both were used in the Kennedy assassination. William Greer, the Secret Service agent assigned to drive Kennedy's limousine, was trained in the use of the Second Apple, and was instructed to grab the Third Apple after the president was killed.[2]
Although the Templars used or acquired at least four apples during the 1960s, it is unknown if they still possess any of them. As of 2012, they are using the Animus program to search for the locations of another to use in their planned satellite. It is hinted by an e-mail in Assassin's Creed that the Second Apple was the one which was used and destroyed in the Denver International Airport Incident.[1]
