Assassin's Creed: Origins is the tenth main installment in the Assassin's Creed series developed by Ubisoft. It is slated for release on 27 October 2017.

The story centers around Bayek, the last Medjay, after he has left his native village of Siwa to pursue a certain mystery. This journey will lead him to travel across Ancient Egypt as the country experiences a shift in power, and play a role in the birth of the Assassin Brotherhood.

Development

Ubisoft Montreal is the lead development studio on Origins, with the team comprising many of the people that previously worked on Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Ubisoft Sofia, Ubisoft Singapore, Ubisoft Shanghai, Ubisoft Chengdu, Ubisoft Bucharest, Ubisoft Kiev and the Sperasoft studio are also collaborating on the development of the game.[1]

Due to the setting being further back in time than previous entries in the franchise, history books did not always suffice as reference. To compensate, Maxime Durand worked closely with various historians and Egyptian experts to fill in the blanks where needed. In some cases, the lack of reference meant the Art team had to create the look and overall feel of what Ancient Egypt would have been like at the time.[1]

A new Artificial Intelligence framework was also created from the ground up, since the developers wanted the NPCs, both human and animal, to have their own agenda and activities. Full day cycles were created to make the world feel dynamic and alive.[1]

To refine how the game displayed colors, the team designed a new color-grading feature to help them create specific and unique color ambiances. They also used satellite images of Egypt to fine-tune the colors for the ground and the vegetation and make them as realistic as possible.[1]

Another visual aspect that received a lot of attention was lighting; the developers studied technical documentation from NASA to better understand how airborne particles impact lighting. Similarly, they looked at the ways in which different sediments refract light to realistically depict different types of water, which can communicate to the player what kinds of wildlife they might encounter in it.[1]

Gameplay

Setting

Origins' map has been described to be "the size of Black Flag's Caribbean, but on the ground".[2] Players will be able to visit major cities such as Giza, Memphis and Alexandria, as well as various smaller villages and settlements in Faiyum and the Nile Delta.[1]

Transportation and activities

You can travel around Egypt by land and by water. On land you can travel at faster rate using horses or camels while on water you can travel by boat and use a large paddle to move yourself forwards. On the side of the boat you can find shields to protect against enemies firing arrows at you. Swimming is also vastly expanded, as you can now randomly dive underwater in search of collectibles and fight marine animals like crocodiles and hippopotamuses if you wish to do so. Hunting returns to the game. New animals such as desert lions, hyenas, crocodiles, hippos etc can be hunted and killed.

In addition, there are 20 tombs to explore; some of these are based on real-life locations, while others are fictional. The tombs will contain traps and some light puzzles, but are at their core more about exploration and uncovering treasure.[2]

Characters, customization and weapons

There are a variety of weapons including: heavy weapons, swords, long weapons, bows and shields. Heavy weapons have good range and maximum damage, these are great at knocking down your enemies, or just splitting them in two if you'd rather. Swords have a nice weight and build to them, this makes them perfect for close combat situations where you need to inflict some serious damage fast. Equipping single handed or dual-wielded swords will offer you unique combos and finishing moves. Long weapons, whether you're swinging them or thrusting them, these do more damage than you might think, especially if you and your weapons level up. The bow is a critical part of your arsenal, giving you freedom to alternate freely between short-range and long-range combat. In special, the Warrior Bow can shoot multiple arrows simultaneously and with the Predator Bow you can alter the trajectory of the arrows during mid-flight. Shields can be used to defend yourself against enemy melee attacks, bash an enemies head in, or to catch arrows shot at you to refill your quiver. Throughout your journey you can find more shields and weapons to expand your inventory.

Combat

With the new combat system, fighting in Assassin's Creed: Origins has been fully redesigned around weapon hitboxes and positioning rather than timed animations, giving you far more control over every combat encounter. Since your enemies have that same freedom, this means that you'll have to consider the positioning and timing of your attacks more than ever before.

In addition to a revised combat system, the new Adrenaline Gauge allows you to build up energy as you fight, giving you the ability to unleash devastating finishing moves on your enemy.

The sneak mode stealth system is present in the game and the stalking zones return.You can perform a jumpshot with your bow. You can also use your bow in third person aim or can aim it in first person.Throwing knives return to the game and can be used for stealth and you are faster in throwing them.

Other

Unlike previous Assassin's Creed games, Origins will have no mini-map, instead employing a kind of compass that points the player in the direction of quests and objects of interest.[3] Senu, Bayek's eagle companion, can be used to locate treasure chests, mark enemies, and discover hidden passages; she can also be upgraded so she can distract or attack enemies.[4]

As a result of Senu's introduction, viewpoints are no longer primarily used to reveal information about an area and its surroundings. Instead, they serve as a way to increase the eagle's detection capacity.[4] Synchronizing a viewpoint also allows the player to fast travel to it, a mechanic that has carried over from previous games.[3]

Eagle Vision no longer gives players information on enemies or their paths, now primarily functioning as a way to identify interactable objects.[4] Origins also has much more RPG elements in the game with things like a redesigned weapon menu where you can equip weapons that you have bought or looted from other enemies and leveling up is more vital than before. You can loot enemies much faster. Freerunning is now much more simplified, and unsafe jumps have made a comeback to make movement even faster and more flexible.

Bayek's hood can be toggled on and off, a feature that had been much requested by the fanbase.[5]

Downloadable and additional content

An additional singleplayer mission, Secrets of the First Pyramids, is available by pre-ordering the game. The Deluxe Pack, included in the Deluxe Edition of game, will give you access to the Ambush at Sea mission, 3 Bonus Ability Points and the Desert Cobra Pack. Ubisoft has also announced a Season Pass, which will include the Calamity Blade weapon and the following content:
