Bayek riding a camel in Siwa

A camel (Camelus genus) is an even-toed ungulate with distinctive fatty deposits, commonly known as humps, on its back. A desert animal, the camel relies on its humps to help it survive in hot climates, and throughout human history, it has been used as a form of transportation across arid regions like Egypt and the Middle East.[1]

Species[edit | edit source]

There are three species of camel: the one-humped dromedary (C. dromedarius), which inhabits the Middle East and the Horn of Africa; the two-humped Bactrian camel (C. bactrianus), which inhabits Central Asia; and the wild Bactrian camel (C. ferus) that, in the 21st century, has limited populations in remote areas of northwest China and Mongolia.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

During the mid-1st century BCE in Egypt, the Siwan Medjay[2] Bayek used dromedary camels to travel throughout the Ptolemaic Kingdom[3] on his quest to eliminate the Order of the Ancients[4] for killing his son Khemu.[5] After co-founding the Egyptian Hidden Ones with his wife Amunet[6] and becoming their Mentor,[7] he continued to use dromedaries to move through the Sinai[8] and the nation's former capital of Thebes.[9]

A millennium later, during the Islamic Golden Age in the 9th century, the Alamut Hidden One Basim ibn Ishaq also used dromedaries when navigating the Wilderness outside the Abbasid Caliphate's capital of Baghdad[10] and exploring the distant archaeological city of al-Ula.[11]
