The Sanctuary of Olympia

The Sanctuary of Olympia, or simply Olympia, was an ancient sanctuary in Elis, Greece.

History

Built mainly out of Naxian marble[1], the Sanctuary hosted the Olympic Games every four years to honour the deities Zeus and Hera.[2]

In 428 BCE, the sanctuary was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra, who replaced her fellow Spartan Testikles in the Olympics held that year.[3] While there, she was given a tour by her companion and friend Barnabas, who taught her about the Olympic Games.[4]

Fame

In addition to the Olympics, the Sanctuary was famous for the Temple of Zeus, which housed the statue of the god Zeus sculpted by the Athenian Phidias around 435 BCE. The statue became known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.[5] His workshop was also located within the Sanctuary.[6]

Economy

The Sanctuary of Olympia was the principal driving force of Elis' economy in the 5th century BCE,[7] attracting tourists and athletes from across Greece, the latter of whom paid to receive training for the Olympic Games. [citation needed]
