The Statue of Zeus

The Statue of Zeus within the Temple of Zeus in the Sanctuary of Olympia in Elis, Greece, was a one of the seven wonders of antiquity.

History

Made by the Athenian sculptor Phidias using gold and ivory, the statue featured the god seated on a richly decorated throne, the goddess Nike on his right hand, and a staff topped with the god's signature eagle in his left hand.

During the 428 BCE Olympic Games, the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the temple and the statue with her friend and the captain of the Adrestia, Barnabas.

Behind the scenes

Though the statue is attested to have existed, it was lost and destroyed in 400s. The statue seen in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey seems to be largely based on the Roman marble and bronze Seated Zeus statue.
