The Zanes of the Cheats was a monument made up of several bronze statues of the Greek god Zeus within the Sanctuary of Olympia in Elis, Greece.
History[edit | edit source]
The statues were made as memorials to athletes who participated in the Olympic Games but were discovered to have cheated or otherwise broken the rules. To further shame them, the pedestals of the statues were engraved with the names of the cheats, and placed outside the entrance to the Stadium.[1]
During the 428 BCE Olympics, the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the Zanes.[2]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The name 'Zanes' is plural of the name Zeus in Elean dialect.
Although it's mentioned how the pedestals were engraved with the offenders' names, this was not replicated in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.
