Escape from Athens

Escape from Athens was a virtual representation of one of Kassandra's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.

Description

Kassandra helped Perikles to escort his friend, the sculptor Phidias, out of Athens.

Dialogue

Pursuing Perikles's tasks, Kassandra went to the workshop of Phidias to assist him in escaping Athens.

• Athenian Light Soldier: Stop! I can't let you go any further.

(If players choose "Why are you out here?")

• Kassandra: It isn't often you see a guard outside of an artist's workshop.
• Athenian Light Soldier: I just do what I'm told, stranger. And until I'm told otherwise, no one is going in or out.

(If players choose "I need to see Phidias.")

• Kassandra: Stand aside. This is important.
• Athenian Light Soldier: So is keeping people out. Maybe you can see Phidias after his trial... If the people spare his life.

Perikles sent me.Lie – Phidias is my lover.Lie – Phidias is my friend.

• Kassandra: Listen. I'm working for Perikles. He wants me to see Phidias.
• Athenian Light Soldier: Well, I'm working for the people of Athens, and they want Phidias dead. Now back off, or you're dead too.

I'm sure drachmae could change your mind.Attack – Have it your way.

• Kassandra: Everyone has a price. How much drachmae is this going to take?
• Athenian Light Soldier: Depends how much you have.
• Kassandra: Here, take it.
• Athenian Light Soldier: That'll do just fine. You tell anyone I did this and you're as good as dead.
• Kassandra: Funny. I was going to say the same to you.

The Athenian soldier walked away.

Kassandra grabbed the soldier by his throat.

• Kassandra: I tried to be nice. I really did.

Kassandra let off the guard, who proceeded to attack her. However, she easily dispatched him

• Kassandra: It's been so long since Phidias and I have... seen each other. You understand, don't you?
• Athenian Light Soldier: Oh! Oh... Come to pay him a last visit before the trial? He's as good as dead, you know. Better make this one count.
• Kassandra: Just don't tell anyone I was here.
• Athenian Light Soldier: Sure, sure. Keep it moving.

• Kassandra: Phidias and I have been friends for a long time. I'm leaving Athens, and I don't know if I'll ever see him again.
• Athenian Light Soldier: You won't. If you want to leave Athens in one piece, you'll go. Now.

Entering the workshop, Kassandra located Phidias on the top floor, working on a sculpture. He dropped his tools in surprise.

• Kassandra: Sorry about that.
• Phidias: How did you get past the guard? No one gets past the guard.
• Kassandra: Relax. Perikles sent me.
• Phidias: Praise Athena, I knew he'd send help. I was worried they sent someone after me.

We need to get you out of here."They" seem to scare you.

• Kassandra: He sent me to get you out of Athens.
• Phidias: So he knows about the plot.
• Kassandra: You mean the trial? From what I've seen, you don't stand a chance.
• Phidias: Pah! The people love me. I am the Phidias! But there are others. Look.

He handed her a rolled up parchment. Kassandra read its contents.

• Kassandra: Malaka. It isn't the trial that Perikles is saving you from... these are instruction to murder you. Who wrote this?

• Kassandra: "They" who?
• Phidias: The shadows in the night... why you fear falling asleep. They're hunting me. Us. No one is safe in Athens anymore.

You're in danger.The Cult.

• Kassandra: So you do know. I tried talking to Perikles, but we were interrupted.
• Phidias: Of course I know about the Cult. Here, look at this.

He handed her a rolled up parchment. Kassandra read its contents.

• Kassandra: These are instructions...
• Phidas: On how to kill me. But they've been torn.
• Kassandra: Then Perikles isn't just getting you out of Athens to save you from trial... He's saving you from being murdered.

• Phidias: I don't know who to trust. I'm just an artist... I just wanted to create. Please, what am I to do?
• Kassandra: First, you need to pull yourself together. You're on trial, the people are against you, and now I find that the Cult want to kill you.

Phidias began to panick.

• Kassandra: I said, pull yourself together.
• Phidias: Yes, of course.

(If players choose "Are the accusation true?")

• Kassandra: Kleon said you're wasting the people's drachmae. If he has his way, he'd serve them your head.
• Phidias: Kleon mentioned me? That's going to hurt Perikles. First impiety, now theft. After all we've done for this city.

(If players choose "Who is Perikles to you?")

• Kassandra: You and Perikles seem close...
• Phidias: For Perikles and me, it started with our love of Athens. Our differences push us to greatness. That is true friendship.

(If players choose "We should get going.")

• Kassandra: All right. We need to go. Do you have any idea where I can take you?
• Phidias: South of Athens, there's an island called Seriphos. My friend Theras lives there. When I discovered the plot against me, I sent word to him. If anyone can help us, he can.
• Kassandra: Good. Any clues he has of the Cultists' identities, I want them.
• Phidias: Yes, yes, anything...

A guard entered the workshop.

• Phidias: A guard!
• Kassandra: I'll distract them while you sneak out. Meet me tonight to set sail for Seriphos. Don't show your face until you see me at the docks.
• Phidias: I understand.
• Athenian Light Soldier: You didn't really think I'd let you come and go as you pleased, did you? Now, where are you?

As Phidias escaped, Kassandra killed the searching guards, then hurried to meet him at the Port of Piraeus at night.

• Phidias: Good, you made it. I was beginning to worry.
• Kassandra: I told you I'd get you out of Athens.
• Phidias: So you did.

(If players choose "Who is the friend we're meeting?")

• Kassandra: Can your friend be trusted?
• Phidias: Theras and I have been friends for a long time. I just sent word telling him where to meet us.

(If players choose "Let's go.")

• Kassandra: Wasting time will only get us into trouble. Let's head to Seriphos while we still can.

They boarded the Adrestia and set sail for Seriphos.

• Phidias: I never thought I'd leave Athens for good.
• Kassandra: I've left places I've called home.

Kassandra spoke to Phidias on the deck.

• Phidias: I hope leaving Athens was the right thing to do.
• Kassandra: Of course it was. You'll be safe this way.
• Phidias: Will I?
• Kassandra: Safer than you were, at least. If the Cult can't find you, they can't kill you. It's simple.
• Phidias: So long as they don't find me, yes. But who knows where they are... who they are... we could be heading somewhere even more dangerous.
• Kassandra: Maybe. But this is your best chance.

She noticed a large island to the west and decided to ask Herodotos about it.

• Kassandra: Herodotos, what's that island ahead of us?
• Herodotos: That, my friend, is the famous island of Salamis.
• Kassandra: The place where Athens defeated the Persians?
• Herotodos: It's in this bay that the great Athenian strategos Themistokles destroyed the Persian fleet and saved the Greek world from annihilation. You don't see any heroes like that anymore.

As the ship sailed south, Phidias spoke up.

• Phidias: Hopefully, the Cult won't bother me now^(sic) I'm out of Athens.

Kassandra did not respond. Phidias spoke up again as the ship sailed on.

• Phidias: This is a nice ship.
• Kassandra: You don't have to do that.
• Phidias: Do what?
• Kassandra: Fill the silence.
• Phidias: Oh! I wasn't trying to do that at all. I simply don't find myself traveling the seas very often.
• Kassandra: It can be freeing.
• Phidias: Yes, "freeing" seems to be an accurate word. Although I've begun to feel a bit sick...
• Kassandra: Lean over the side if you need to, otherwise you're cleaning it up.

As they neared Seriphos, Phidias's seasickness worsened.

• Phidias: Is your stomach turning as much as mine is?
• Kassandra: You'll get used to it. We'll reach Seriphos before long.

They docked at the island at the town of Chora. Phidias' friend Theras greeted them.

• Civilian: It's good to see you alive and well, Phidias!
• Phidias: And you, Theras. As you can see, I didn't get here alone.
• Civilian: Ah, yes, the kind and thoughtful hero you mentioned in your letter!

I just wanted Phidias safe.I did this for myself.

• Kassandra: I'm glad I could get him out alive.
• Civilian: And for that heroism, I've found some information on a man named Brison who's plotting Phidias's early demise. Hopefully, you can make something of this clue.

Kassandra examined the parchment Theras handed to her.

• Kassandra: I can.

• Phidias: Please give Perikles my thanks and my farewell. And be careful - I still believe many in Athens are in danger.

Outcome

Kassandra helped Phidias to escape Athens, escorting him to the island of Seriphos where his friend Theras awaited him.
