The Nine Realms were considered the various homeworlds of the Isu Norse gods and other races that existed along the branches of Yggdrasil, which wove them together to form the Norse cosmos. The realms were Álfheimr, home of the elves; Asgard, home of the Æsir; Jötunheimr, home of the Jötnar; Múspellsheimr, the world of fire; Midgard, home of humanity; Svartálfaheimr/Niðavellir, home of the dark elves or dwarves; Vanaheimr, home of the Vanir; Niflheim, the world of ice; and Helheimr, the world of the dead.[1]

In the 9th century, the shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan regularly consumed psychoactive mixtures prepared by her clan's resident oracle Valka, which sent her on hallucinogenic visions where she relived Odin's memories of Asgard and Jötunheimr during the Isu Era in his attempts to avert his fated encounter with Loki's son Fenrir at the onset of Ragnarök.[2]
