The Volcanic Islands was a name used to refer to the group of Greek islands consisting of Thera, Anaphi, and Nisyros, located in the Aegean Sea. The name arose from the volcanic activity present on all the islands.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Though home to the Minoan civilization in the past, it was demolished by a volcanic eruption,[1] and by the 5th century BCE only ruins of them remained on the islands of Thera and Anaphi.[2] Even older ruins littered the landscape of Nisyros.[2]

At some point, the Samian Pythagoras explored the islands[3], as did the historian Herodotos.[2] During the Peloponnesian War, also the Spartan misthios Kassandra ended up visiting the islands, as both Herodotos[2] as well as Myrrine, Kassandra's mother, suggested she do so.[4]

Hundreds of years later, Layla Hassan visited the islands as well, as her experiences via Kassandra's memories led her there.[2]

Economy[edit | edit source]

Rich in sulfur due to the volcanic activity, the yellow mineral was especially mined on Anaphi. It stained the landscape of all of the Volcanic Islands, and turned the waters in and around them green.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

In Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, the Volcanic Islands are never given an epithet unlike almost all other regions. However, on Ubisoft's own website , the island is named "Forge of the World", referencing how the world itself is 'created' by volcanic activity.[1]
