Scottish Brotherhood of Assassins

The Scottish Brotherhood of Assassins was a branch of Assassins located in Scotland.

History

In the last 13th century, the Assassins fought against the Templars backing Edward I of England during the First War of Scottish Independence as a cover for their operations to recover the Isu artifacts protected by the Assassins and to eradicate the last remnants of the Children of Fal. However, the Assassins took a major setback when their base, Beinn Eallair became under siege by the Templars, who nearly decimated the clan and Assassins there. The only survivors were Norwegian Assassin Sören and an elderly couple Mairead and Ruadh. Pressured by the weight of the Brotherhood, Sören left the Brotherhood and found a new clan of mercenaries. However, his departure led to the Templars and its hunters, the Lann Fala, to nearly kill all of the Children of Fal and Assassins in the country.

In 1296, the Assassins assigned and paid Sören and his warriors to come back with the twin survivors of the Children of Fal, Fillan and Ailéas, without telling him about them being Children of Fal like him. However, finding only Fillan, the mercenaries brought him to Scone, where an Assassin council was held to discuss Fillan and his next steps. Within two days, Fillan joined the Brotherhood, who assigned his training to Sören, due to his prowess and ability. Sören agreed on the promise that they do not ask of him ever again. However, their base at Scone was attacked by both the English and the Lann Fala, but the Assassins and their allies successfully escaped and bested their attackers.

By the end of the year, Sören trained Fillan in the Assassin ways. Assassin spy Deorsa soon assigned Fillan to join Assassin William Wallace's revolt against the English. Once Fillan accepted, Sören and his mercenaries also joined in on the war effort. When they all arrived in Lanark, they joined William Wallace's plan to revolutionize the citizens, by having Fillan assassinate English captain Bradley Dacre while the rest kill Sheriff William Heselrig, an ally to the Lann Fala. Fortunately, both missions succeeded, with Fillan finding Ailéas alive but uncovering that a traitor is within the Brotherhood. Nevertheless, altogether they fought off English forces while they made their way to Dunstaffnage, the base of the Macdougall clan.

After aiding in the fort's defenses and conferring with their ally and clan leader Alexander Macdougall, the twins, Deorsa, Sören, and druidess Moira left the fort and went to secure the Stone of Fal from the Templars. While Sören left for Iona alone, the rest arrived on the Isle of Mull to find Wallace's men. After finding them, they rode towards Iona, albeit losing Wallace's men, and soon found Lann Fala leader Cornavii and his men at Iona Abbey with Cornavii holding the stone.

Facing each other, Cornavii almost used the stone of the arriving party but was halted from Sören's near-assassination attempt. However, Cornavii was warned by the traitorous Assassin James of Crannach, who accompanied the party and instantly killed Deorsa. Amidst the fighting, the group managed to kill James and the Lann Fala soldiers but Sören was injured from his fight with Cornavii. With the twins and Moira going to attack, Cornavii activated the stone and plagued them with hallucinating nightmares. Fortunately, Fillan managed to overcome the stone's power and disarmed the stone from Cornavii. With Ailéas also free of the influence, the twins fought against Cornavii, who proved to be resilent.

Almost overwhelmed, the twins were advised by Moira to attack the stone. When Ailéas hit the stone, its power pushed everyone back, especially Cornavii. With the upper hand, the twins held him at swordpoint. Before he could finish his remark, they killed him. With Moira's help, they secured the stone within the abbey's vault and ultimately eliminated the Lann Fala.
