The Battle of Reading was a military engagement between the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings in Reading, during the Viking conquest of England. It took place on 4 January 871, just four days prior to the Battle of Ashdown.[1]

Battle and aftermath[edit | edit source]

The Saxons, commanded by Æthelred and his younger brother Alfred, suffered great losses, though both commanders managed to flee. The Vikings, under the orders of Halfdan Ragnarsson, burned the corpses of their enemies in a great pyre before giving chase to their escaping enemies, meeting them "where ashes fall".[1]
