Gram (Old Norse: Gramr, "Wrath") was an alleged Sword of Eden owned by the Isu Odin and later by the Norse hero Sigmund and his son Sigurd.
Owners[edit | edit source]
- Odin (until c. 75,000 BCE)[1]
- Unknown Odin impersonator (c. 6th century)[2]
- Sigmund (c. 6th century)[2]
- Sigurd (c. 6th century)[2]
History[edit | edit source]
Around the 6th century, a figure thought to be Odin, disguised as a beggar, plunged a Sword of Eden into a tree called Barnstokkr, stating that whoever was able to pull it free would receive it as a gift. Only the warrior Sigmund proved able to do so, and subsequently claimed the Sword as his own.[2]
According to legend, Sigmund's son Sigurd later inherited his father's Sword and used it to slay the dragon Fafnir.[3]
In the late 9th century, the shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir, the jarlskona of the Raven Clan and host to Odin's genetic memories, relived a distorted version of Odin's life via drug-induced dreams. Gram appeared in these visions as a weapon that could be used by Odin while he tried to rescue his son Baldr from Niflheimr.[4]
In 2020, Layla Hassan, an Assassin who relived Eivor's memories, modified her Animus to include a version of this great sword inspired by the mythical realm of Svartálfaheimr as part of the shieldmaiden's arsenal.[5]
