The Mines of the Great Trench formed the northeastern region of Messenia, Greece. Consisting mostly of a part of Mount Taygetos and some other hills, this region was home to the city of Messene, a small community bordering a lake.

During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra explored the area.^[1] She also followed the Persians Darius into this region while they were hunting down Amorges, seeking to demolish both the Order of the Ancients' foothold in Greece, as well as its Order of Dominion branch.^[2]^[3]
