Aiantides
Aiantides the Proud was originally a resident of Potidaia in Makedonia, Greece during the Peloponnesian War.
Biography[edit | edit source]
A Makedonian man with a family including a brother and an aunt, Aiantides was quite content on living in the village of Potidaia. That all changed when, around 429 BCE, the village was attacked by a joint force of a Spartan army detachment and Persians following the lead of the Huntsman, the Magus of the Order of Hunters branch of the Order of the Ancients. While some villagers fled, others were slain, and yet others, among them Aiantides, were captured. Unaware of the reasons behind the attack, Aiantides fled as soon as possible when the Spartan misthios Kassandra came to the village, summoned by a letter requesting help.[1]
Unable or unwilling to accept being in Kassandra's debt for freeing him, Aiantides left a resource package for her as thanks.[2] However, despite his apparent desire for that to be the end of their interaction, he observed himself to be once more indebted to her when she slew the member of the Order known as the Recruiter, who had held his meetings at Aiantides' brother's goat farm.[3] Wanting to leave all of that behind, Aiantides travelled to Achaia with other refugees.[4]
While there, the Order forces stationed at the Teichos of Herakles assaulted the group and took them prisoners, including Aiantides' aunt. Unbeknownst to Aiantides, Kassandra had been summoned to Achaia and tasked to free the prisoners at the fortress.[4] Delighted to see his aunt anew, Aiantides was less thrilled to hear who had helped her out. Nonetheless, he decided he would have to repay Kassandra somehow and so left her a message.[5] Meeting Kassandra on Achaia's northern shore, Aiantides offered her his services, but as there was nothing he could actually do for her, they agreed he owed her a favor.[5]
Sometime later, Aiantides heard there was a wealth to be made in Messenia. Having spent all his property on gifts to Kassandra, Aiantides reached the region in hopes of making a fortune. Instead, he was caught and sold as a slave, becoming a prisoner amongst the helots in Messene. Kassandra again rescued him while she was in the region hunting the Order of Dominion. Kassandra defeated the bandits and escorted Aiantides to safety. Bemoaning the fact that he was once again indebted to her, with no way that he could see to pay her off, she attempted to ease his mind, and offered Aiantides the chance to pay his debts off by working as a crew member on her ship, the Adrestia.[6]
