The assassination of Galeazzo Maria Sforza was an act committed by the Templars in an effort to destabilise relations between Milan and Florence.

Revelation

As Rodrigo Borgia and his men leave Florence on foot by night, they are attacked by the Assassin Giovanni, who was stalking them from the rooftops. Rodrigo himself retreats and his men easily easily dispatched by Giovanni. Giovanni captures one and takes the prisoner to the home of Lorenzo de Medici (Giovanni's employer) for questioning.[1]

Tortured with a rack by Uberto Alberti and the Medici's men, the prisoner revealed their plans: Galeazzo Maria Sforza, the Duke of Milan and a powerful ally of the Medici, was to be murdered the day after Christmas, during the Feast of Santo Stefano (Saint Stephen). Lorenzo immediately ordered Giovanni to leave for Milan to thwart their plans.[1]

"At the altar, when the echo of the choir, becomes loud, and the bell rings for the twelfth and last time, the Duke of Milan, will die!"

The Duke makes his entrance to the church with many of his men with him. Watching from within the crowd, Giovanni planned his next move to get inside the church. He left the crowd & climbed the building next to the church. Jumping the gap between the two buildings, Giovanni moved in.

As Giovanni walked in, the Duke arrived at the altar and begins his prayer. Watching his surroundings, Giovanni saw a man, Giovanni Andrea Lampugnani, signaling his allies. He knew these were the assassins.

Lampugnani stepped forward to kiss the ring of the Duke. Sforza was pleased, but Lampugnani held his hand tight, and quickly plunged his dagger to the Duke's stomach. Gerolamo Olgiati and Carlo Visconti proceeded to do more damage and stab the Duke's back, as the others prepared to attack the Duke's bodyguards

Giovanni rushed forward to intercept the assassins. Although he managed to take down some of them, it was clear that he was too late, as the Duke's lifeless body lay flat in front of the altar.

Lampugnani tried to escape, but one of the bodyguards chased after him, and eventually pinned him down to a wall. Despite Giovanni's pleas to spare him, the guard snapped Lampugnani's neck, killing him and then spitting on his corpse. As the guard left, Giovanni searched Lampugnani's body, and found Ducats in his bag. With this, he left Milan, and returned to Florence.

Aftermath

As Rodrigo escaped the city of Florence, successfully robbing the Medici of a powerful ally, Giovanni prepared to leave for the city of Venice, where he would begin his search for the men responsible for the death of Galeazzo Maria Sforza.
