Lampugnani's conspiracy[edit | edit source]
On 26 December 1476, Visconti and his fellow Templars Giovanni Andrea Lampugnani and Gerolamo Olgiati, alongside Lampugnani's servant Franzone, attended the Saint Stephen's Day Mass at the Basilica di Santo Stefano Maggiore. When Sforza arrived, Lampugnani was the first to approach and stab him, with the others following swiftly and dealing their own blows to the duke.[1]
While Lampugnani was killed shortly after by one of Sforza's guards, Visconti, Olgiati, and Franzone managed to escape, only to be caught and executed within a week after Franzone was captured and disclosed the identities of the other two while under torture.[1]
