Phaistos Village (Ancient Greek: Φαιστός) is a site in the Greek island of Krete. In classical antiquity, it was located in Minos' Legacy region of Messara.
History
Formerly a polis, Phaistos was largely destroyed by the neighboring city, Gortyn, which coveted the former's territory. [citation needed] It was also known for having the second largest Minoan palace on the island (after Knossos Palace), where the Phaistos Disk was found in 1908.[1]
Coveted by Gortyn,[1] Phaistos sought to make peace with its neighbour during the Peloponnesian War. This attempt was foiled by Ptolemaios, aided by the Spartan misthios Kassandra.[2]
Around the same time, Phaistos Village was also targeted by the Cult of Kosmos, who made the local theater their base.[3]
