Palatinus was a rank within the Order of the Ancients whose members were drawn from judges, merchants, and soldiers. Alongside their fellow rank, Preost, the palatini held many spots within every branch, excluding the Wardens of Relics. In the other four branches, the palatini directly followed their own Maegester. In the 870s, every palatinus was tracked down and assassinated by the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir and then their medallions were found their personal effects and then given to Hidden Ones member, Hytham.[1] From the Order's hierarchy system during this time, the rank "Palatinus" seems to have an equivalent footing to the rank "Preost."

Behind the Scenes

A "Palatinus" was a high ranking official of at times varying positions within the Roman Empire and its descendants. The derived term "paladin" referred to the Twelve Peers of Charlemagne's Frankish court but has now come to mean any exceptionally devout knight championing a righteous cause. Notably both the Roman and Frankish empires were ruled by leaders of the Order of the Ancients.
