The Elves, better known as the Ancients by the Isu, are a mysterious race which existed ages ago and were immensely more advanced than the Isu themselves. Their race faced extinction when Surtr and his armies invaded and massacred all of the Elves of Álfheimr.

History

The Elves are described by the Isu Odin to be a very ancient race who were described to be brighter than the sun and their understanding over all things related to the Hugr was unparalleled even by the brightest of the Isu.

During Baldr's childhood, Odin told him a story on Surtr, a tyrannical Isu warlord, invaded Álfheimr and massacred all of the Elves, rendering the Elves extinct. Odin even mentioned that Loki was moved by this and wept for what the Muspel warlord did to the Elves.

As for their knowledge of the Hugr, it was all confiscated and now is solely known to the tyrant of Múspellsheimr. Since then, many of their secret inventions and artifacts, like the Salakar, have been sealed away in ancient vaults. Even the brightest of the Isu, except Surtr, having little understanding on how these Elven mechanisms, runes and artifacts function.

Mythology

The Dökkálfar ("Dark Elves") and Ljósálfar ("Light Elves") are two contrasting types of elves in Norse mythology. The light elves were believed to live in Álfheimr, as described in Snorri Sturluson's 13th century text Prose Edda, while the dark elves lived underground and, despite the name, were separate beings from the Svartálfar or "black elves" from Svartálfaheimr.[1]
