The Cult of Baphomet was a small, secretive group of cultists active in Paris, France, during the late 18th century. They worshipped Baphomet, a deity the Knights Templar had been accused of worshipping centuries before.
Around 1791, the Assassin Arno Dorian stole two holy chalices from Notre-Dame as part of his feigned initiation into the cult. After being granted their password, "the father of understanding",[1] Arno entered the cult's lair beneath a graveyard and eliminated three Templars who had infiltrated the cult.[2]
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The name Baphomet is thought to be a corruption of the name Muhammad, but there is folk etymology that instead proposes it as a corruption of the Arabic phrase أب الفهامة (Ab al-Fahama), "the Father of Understanding", which was utilized in the Assassin's Creed lore.
- The cult is a continuation of the ahistorical Templars' faith in the Father of Understanding. The real cult of Baphomet was conceived by occultist Éliphas Lévi in the 19th century. His form of Baphomet, the Goat of Mendes, or "the sphinx of the occult sciences", was later adopted by satanists.
