Lieutenant is a leadership rank that is Second-in-Command to the Grand Master of the Templar Order, alongside Master Templars as Templar leaders of Templar Rites.

Being part of a Rite leadership, their role under their Grand Master is to uphold the Templar principles while they assist in leading the Rite to guide humanity for the betterment of society in their aim for peace.

The earliest known individual with the rank of Lieutenant was held by the Ancients Fulke of the Wardens of Relics sect, under Grand Maegester Alfred of Wessex during the Viking expansion of England.

The only known Templars that had the rank of Lieutenants was during the Age of Enlightenment, as the Parisian Rite had three different individuals that served as Lieutenant to the House of Serre, a Templar family who had held the rank of Grand Master for several decades.

Their Grand Master have the authority of their Rite, that Rite is named after a specific geographic region.[1] A Lieutenant would participate in their meetings with other Rites to discuss the politics of their nation, domestic and global, and conditions of the Order itself. Ensuring their brother Templars that whatever direction their Rite would take, it would benefit the Order and adhere to their principles, therefor maintained their international relations.[2]

In terms of internal policies, a Lieutenant is also part of the Grand Master's Rite meetings to plan the direction of their own nation, were they would discuss their plans with their subordinates.[2] They are Seneschals, Advisors, Commanders, Preceptors, Knights, Warriors, Clerics, and finally, the Disciples.[3]

Being themselves a subordinate of a Grand Master, they could also be given other duties, such as organizing the training of the next Grand Master, the extent of that training would be sett by the Grand Master. For example, François de la Serre, who approved that Julie de la Serre and the British Templar Frederick Weatherall could conduct the training of swordsmanship to their daughter, Élise de la Serre. While François himself gave her the education of the Templars and their principles.[2]
