Offa (died 796) was a King of Mercia, reigning from 757 until his death. His rapid expansion of his territory paved the way for the unification of England, and he was considered the most powerful Anglo-Saxon king before Alfred the Great. Unbeknowst to many, Offa was also a member of the Order of the Ancients.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Reign[edit | edit source]
Offa built a linear military fortification to define the western border of Mercia.[1] Later, this fortification was named after Offa, and it was called Offa's Dyke.[2]
Under Offa, the rule and prosperity of Mercia reached its peak.[3] Offa also detailed the previous kings of Lindsey who claimed to be descendants of the god Woden; Offa's list survived as part of the Anglican Chronicle of Kings.[4] He also built a fort in the Cyne Belle Castle as proof of the superiority of Mercia.[5]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Offa's membership in the Order of the Ancients was uncovered by Tata, a 9th-century Palatinus of the Order whose grandfather had fought alongside Offa. Tata later learned all he could about Offa and sought to follow in his footsteps. This was further discovered by the Raven Clan shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir during the 870s in her hunt of the Order, which eventually led her to cross paths with and eliminate Tata.[6]
