Magdalena

Magdalena was an English nun who served as abbess in the Isle of Ely Monastery in the late 9th century.

Biography

Viking attack

In 870, she was the one to welcome Brother Ealric into the monastery, waking him in time for prayer and warning him that his father's name would make his life difficult at Ely. Later the same day, as the heathens were to attack them, Magdalena and Ealric went to secure the monastery's relics, with her directing him to take them through the catacombs, while she stayed behind.

Personality and traits

Magdalena was a pious woman, and like other nuns wore the traditional garb. During a heathen attack, she displayed responsibility and courage, as she directed the protection of the monastery's relics.
