Eitri (Runic: ᛅᛁᛏᚱᛁ) was an ancient city and the largest one of those located in the realm of Svartálfaheimr. The city was home to the group later remembered in Norse mythology as as dwarves. As opposed to other cities like Eden, the people of Eitri did not participate in human slavery, instead prevailing in the craft of weapons and technology such as Pieces of Eden.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

The Tower[edit | edit source]

Around the time of the Human-Isu War, the Isu who decided not to get involved in the conflict started to investigate in possible solutions to save both their civilization and Earth from the Great Catastrophe. One of these plans consisted of building four towers to redirect the solar flares into the Grand Temple to dispel it.[3] The first of these towers, Maekinn, was built in Eitri and employed the populace of master craftsmen. In secret, the Isu scientist Juno made regular visits to the site to see to its specific construction, without the knowledge of the rest of the Capitoline Triad. Though, the efforts were stopped midway through constructing even one of these towers since it would take too long.

The Muspel invasion[edit | edit source]

At the dawn of the Great Catastrophe around 75,000 BCE,[1] the Muspels' warlord Surtr invaded Svartálfaheimr.[4] The Muspels came on huge Muspelheim Monoliths made to terraform lands to be more hospitable for them and Eitri was promptly made into a barren wasteland, allegedly due to the dragon Níðhǫggr.[5] Surtr set up his new headquarters within Hreidmar Palace, from where he could oversee the half-finished tower, and enslaved the dwarves to work in extreme conditions to activate the tower for his own purpose. The dwarves who survived the initial onslaught and had either remained undetected or escaped bondage all fled to hidden shelters, which they made into hideouts for other survivors.[4]

Shortly after Surtr captured the Æsir prince Baldr when he tried to lead dwarven resistance efforts,[6] his parents Odin and Frigg travelled to the city hoping to rescue him. The pair fought the Muspel forces and reached Hreidmar Palace, where they saw their son hanging in chains from the ceiling. However, it was a trap laid by Surtr and his wife Sinmara, and the two couples entered into individual duels with each other. The Asgardians lost, with Surtr executing Frigg and gravely wounding Odin,[7] but once Odin healed, he travelled the regions around the city aiding dwarven opposition to their occupiers.[4]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Eitri is an alternate name in Norse mythology for the dwarf Sindri, who made the iron boar Gullinbursti, the ring Draupnir, and the hammer Mjölnir with his brother Brokkr.[8]
