Hodda Shelter

The Dwarven Shelters were makeshift safehouses that served as places of refuge for the dwarves of Svartálfaheimr.[1] Around 75,000 BCE,[2] a coalition of Muspel and jötnar warriors invaded the realm under Surtr's orders. Led by the resistance group called the Sons of Ivaldi, who marked their secret entrances with covert symbols, dwarven refugees fled to the shelters in hopes to wait out the invasion.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

The enclosed content covers events or items that, while canonically experienced, may or may not have been altered in some manner and cannot be taken at face value.

Odin's campaign to rescue Baldr[edit | edit source]

In Eivor Varinsdottir's visions of Odin's time in Svartalfheim, the Æsir lord was led to Jordber Shelter by his rescuers and spies Halstein and Sigrun after his failure at the hands of Surtr and his wife Sinmara. Meeting the shelter's chief Brudd, Havi was welcomed into their refuge. After becoming acquainted, Brudd asked Havi to aid the other shelters against the Muspels. Havi agreed to aid them if it helped him on his own mission.[3]

Fighting against Glöð[edit | edit source]

Venturing further down Gullnámar, Havi followed the symbols and found the entrance to Grenhellir Shelter.[4] He soon found the shelter chief Gunborg and was told that his former prisoner Ivaldi was seemingly killed by the Muspels and how Uldar fell under Surtr's son Glöð's control. Wanting an upper hand against Surtr, Havi was informed that one of her informants Fritjof had been missing and that his last location was at the Jeweler's District in Uldar.[5]

After Havi successfully rescued Fritjof and his cousin Tyra from Muspel hands, they traveled back to Grenhellir Shelter while Havi set his eyes to find dwarven scholar Einar and the relic at Hreidmar Palace.[6] However, Havi's plans changed when he saved Einar, who stated he only aided the Muspels to save his son Fritjof. Thus, Havi enlisted Einar, Fritjof, and Tyra to break into the Vault of the Ancients in the Old City. After they all completed their preparations with the Sunstone, their plan succeeded and they found Ivaldi surprisingly alive.[7]

Havi made his way back to Grenhellir Shelter. At the back entrance, he met and talked with Ivaldi, who thanked him for rescuing him. After Havi asked for his help, they were both interrupted by a quake as Havi saw Glöð in the distance. Confronting Glöð, Havi was challenged to a fight. Havi managed to kill him right outside the shelter. Back inside, he thanked his newfound allies as he left for the next shelter.[7]

The fight for the Salakar[edit | edit source]

Traveling to Svaladal, Havi found more dwarven symbols and followed their directions to the entrance of Jordeygr Shelter.[4] Inside, he found the shelter's chiefs, Brammer and Lom, who were shirking their duties and drinking. Insulting the dwarves, Havi asked them about Surtr's daughter Eysa while Brammer informed him of her last location at a smeltery. Thanking Brammer, Havi left to seek out and abduct Eysa.[8] After a series of events, Havi garnered Eysa as an ally after both exposed her father's plans with an elven artifact Salakar, which was secured from Surtr's scientist Calder, whose hugr was taken.[9]

Returning back to the Jordeygr Shelter, Havi asked Brammer and Lom about any jötunn that has been a nuisance recently. Instantly, Brammer revealed he and Lom are Fjalar and Galar, who were wanted by Suttungr for their part in his father Kvasir's death. They explained his right-hand Malvigr was chasing them. However, Brammer and Lom tricked Havi into going to their home at Gapihus. After Havi left, Brammer and Lom left the shelter later to inform Malvigr of Havi's location. However, they were immediately killed by Malvigr at Gomul-stifla while she was later beaten and killed by Havi with the Salakar.[10]

Bartering with Sinmara[edit | edit source]

With the Salakar filled, Havi met with Ivaldi in Vangrinn as they set their destinations to Hodda Shelter.[11] Searching for the dwarven symbols, he found the entrance to Hodda Shelter and waited till night for either of the shelter chiefs Brokkr or Sindri.[4] Upon nightfall, Havi found both Ivaldi and Brokkr arguing about making Mjölnir as Havi asked about Sindri's whereabouts. To garner Brokkr's help, he left to find Sindri at Alethorp. However, Havi found Sindri dead by the Salakar and brought his body back to Hodda Shelter. Immediately, Brokkr and the shelter's fugitives prepared Sindri's service.[11]

Needing Brokkr's help, Havi asked Ivaldi to say last words at the service outside the shelter. During the funeral, Ivaldi praised Sindri's skill while Havi gave his condolences to Brokkr before asking for his help. With some convincing, Brokkr aided Ivaldi on figuring out why the Salakar was needed by Surtr.[12] In the shelter, Brokkr and Ivaldi informed Havi of the hugrs residing in the Salakar but not of its importance yet. However, they were interrupted by Eysa, who informed Havi about Sinmara's unwillingness to trade the relic for Baldr. To push her to meet, Havi left the shelter to inflict damage by destroying her supplies, inventions and resources for her army.[13]

Havi returned to Hodda Shelter while he learned from Brokkr and Ivaldi of an extra hugr in the Salakar. Brokkr then informed Havi of Sinmara's willingness to trade the Salakar for Baldr. Taking the Salakar, Havi left the shelter to meet Eysa and Sinmara at Feigardr to trade. However, he found out of Sinmara's deceit upon learning of Baldr being dead from being the first victim of the Salakar. In response, Havi killed Sinmara in response and then left the Salakar at Hodda Shelter.[14]

Final fight against Surtr[edit | edit source]

After some days of anguish, Havi returned to Hodda Shelter to find Ivaldi and the dwarves inside being held captive by Muspel guards. After saving them, he was told by Ivaldi that the relic was taken by Brokkr to Eitri. In the destroyed city, Havi managed to kill Surtr with the Salakar and his sword, but Brokkr lost his life in the process.[15]

Venturing back to Hodda Shelter, Havi informed the dwarves of their freedom but received a lack of applause. There, he was confronted by Hyrrokin, who insulted him for his blood rampage and spoke of the oppositions from Loki, Múspellsheimr, and Suttungr. She then revealed that when he killed Surtr, he started Ragnarök. Before she left, Havi told Hyrrokin to find the Salakar and how she may use it to save her late husband Aita. After she left, Havi and Ivaldi talked about why he wanted to help Hyrrokin. He revealed that he hoped that she release the hugrs and that Baldr may find peace on the other side.[15]

Aiding the Sons of Ivaldi[edit | edit source]

Through his journey in the realm, Havi rescued many dwarves from their Muspels and jötnar captors as they thanked him before fleeing to their respective dwarven shelters. When he revisited those shelters, the refugees he saved thanked him and gifted him with different resources and materials for his rescues.[16] He also assisted Jordeygr Shelter regain their blacksmith Skavi after helping him move on from his pet raven Kraka leaving him.[17]
