South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is a sovereign state occupying the southern tip of Africa.

History[edit | edit source]

Golden Age of Piracy[edit | edit source]

By the early 18th century, Cape Town, one of the earliest European outposts, had become the economic and cultural hub of the Cape Colony, and its trading market was prosperous.[1] The Welsh pirate Edward Kenway traded olive oil[1] and cocoa pods with both the English and Dutch settlers of the city.[2]

Victorian era[edit | edit source]

In the mid-19th century, the British Empire was at war with the Xhosa Kingdom in what was the Cape Colony. The Royal Navy sent reinforcements in the form of a frigate, the HMS Birkenhead. In 1851, however, the frigate struck a large rock and sank along the colony's coast. Many British soldiers died, others were evacuated, and few survived the impact.[3]

Modern times[edit | edit source]

In the fall of 1913, First Civilization skulls were discovered in the village of Boskop.[4]
