Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa, as well as its oldest city.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Originally established as one of the earliest European outposts, by the early 18th century, Cape Town had become the economic and cultural hub of the Cape Colony and its trading market was prosperous.[2] The Welsh pirate Edward Kenway traded olive oil[2] and cocoa pods with both the English and Dutch settlers in the city.[3]

In 1851, the HMS Birkenhead sailed past Cape Town and was grounded by a large rock, which caused it to sink while transporting British Empire troops to participate in the Eighth Xhosa War.[4]
