Two Kings of Sparta

The Two Kings of Sparta were the historic joint rulers of the polis of Sparta, in Lakonia, Greece. One was a member of the Agiad dynasty and the other, a member of the Eurypontid dynasty, both of whom claimed lineage from the legendary Greek hero Herakles.
This joint rulership was designed to ensure that both kings remained honest, with their counterpart acting as a check on their powers. The Two Kings were also accountable to the ephors.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
During the Peloponnesian War, the rulership was shared by Kings Archidamos and Pausanias. However, it was disturbed by the misthios Kassandra as she accused one of them being a member of the secretive organization called Cult of Kosmos, and a traitor to Sparta.[2] Pausanias was ousted as the cultist and was dragged away by the ephors, leaving Archidamos as the sole king.[3]
