Tainaros

Tainaros, also called Cape Tenaron, was a location on the middle peninsula in the southern Peloponnese.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Belonging to Lakonia, the location was famous for the marble quarries producing red and black marble.[1]

Mythology[edit | edit source]

In Greek mythology, Tainaros was assumed to be one of the gateways to the underworld, guarded by Cerberos.[1] Due to this, when King Eurystheas of Mycenae ordered the hero Herakles to bring him Cerberos, Herakles journeyed to Tainaros after visiting the Sanctuary of Eleusis to prepare.[2]

5th century BCE[edit | edit source]

During the Peloponnesian War, the place was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra.[3]
