Spyro was a horse belonging to a Boeotian merchant who lived and worked in Thebes, Greece during the 5th century BCE.
History[edit | edit source]
Spyro was the Oil Merchant's beloved stallion, who helped cart the merchant's shipments to his clients, which included the local athlete and the champion of Boeotia, Drakon.[1]
During the Peloponnesian War soldiers from Potnies Military Camp stole Spyro, and took it back to their camp.[1]
When the Spartan misthios Kassandra came to Thebes, she found the merchant moaning the loss of Spyro. She offered to save the horse, and the merchant was pleased with this.[1]
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The name of the horse may be a reference to Spyro, a series of platform video games featuring a purple dragon called Spyro.
- The name Spyro is a variant of the name Spiro, derived from the name Spyridon (Σπυρίδων), meaning 'basket used to carry seeds' in ancient Greek.
