The Kalydonian Boar was a legendary boar which inhabited the northwestern Sacred Lands of Apollo region of Phokis, Greece.
History[edit | edit source]
Mythology[edit | edit source]
In Greek mythology, the Kalydonian Boar was a beast sent by Artemis to ravage the region of Kalydon in Aetolia following the king of the region forgetting to sacrifice on the altars of the Hunting Goddess.[1] Jason and his Argonauts, among them Asklepios, Atalanta, and Telamon, participated in hunting down the beast.[2]
5th century BCE[edit | edit source]
Around the time of the Peloponnesian War, the Kalydonian Boar made its lair in the western reaches of Phokis. Its arrival, as well as that of other legendary animals, was noticed by the Daughters of Artemis, and their acting leader, Daphnae, went out to find the challenger the return of these animals foretold, according to the Daughters' tradition.[3] In 431 BCE, Daphnae met the Spartan misthios Kassandra, who she tasked with hunting down the beast. When Kassandra returned victorious, with the Boar's pelt as proof, Daphnae was impressed.[4]
Place[edit | edit source]
The beast's lair was simply known as its location, for the Boar was ferocious and thought to be 'unkillable'. The cave provided it shelter from the weather, and the swamp worked to its advantage against anyone who dared disturb it.[4]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The quest "The Daughters of Artemis" can be unlocked either by finding Daphnae at the temple, or by killing the Kalydonian Boar.
