Gillingr
Gillingr was an Isu jötunn and the father of Suttungr.
Mythology[edit | edit source]
According to legend, Gillingr and his wife were the victims of two dwarves, who committed treason and killed them. To survive Suttungr's wrath, they gave him a "magical mead" in exchange for their lives and this held back Suttungr's wrath for a time.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
At some point in his life, Gillingr challenged dwarven brothers Fjalar and Galar to a drinking contest. However, Gillingr fell over drunk and broke his neck, dying in the process. Suttungr, unaware of the details surrounding his father's death or simply not caring whether his information was correct, blamed the dwarves and put a bounty on their heads. However, the dwarves bartered their lives with the special mead, to which Suttungr accepted.[2] However, their agreement was dissolved after the Æsir lord Odin stole the mead for himself,[3] which led Suttungr to send Malvigr, his right hand, to assassinate the dwarven brothers as a response.[4]
Legacy and influence[edit | edit source]
In Eivor Varinsdottir's visions of Odin's time in Svartálfaheimr, the Æsir lord recalled the incident once he learned of the true identities of the shelter chiefs of Jordber Shelter to be Fjalar and Galar, the accused perpetrators of Gillingr's murder.[2]
