Hexione

Hexione was a priestess living in Linou in Elis, Greece during the 5th century BCE.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Hexione joined forces with Thelxiope and Xenokleia, her 'sisters', and together they agreed to work as the priestesses of the Eagle Bearer, the Spartan misthios Kassandra, spreading news of her deeds. In time, they had gathered a cult following around their version of the Eagle Bearer from the farmers of Linou.^[1]

After this was done, she visited with her 'sisters' the Argive sculptor Polykleitos, commissioning him to make a statue of the Eagle Bearer. He agreed, and journeyed to Elis.^[2]^[3]

Hexione was surprised and elated to meet the Eagle Bearer, as she followed Phidias to the village after rescuing the artist and his tools from local bandits.^[3] Hexione suggested Kassandra turn to helping various villagers in the area, while Hexione herself prepared a feast for the Eagle Bearer, plotting to poison the misthios.^[3]

The girl Myrto, daughter of the hunter Akatos, wanted to help Hexione, and she accepted. While preparing the meat, Myrto stole a taste and fell ill soon after. Realizing she was in trouble, Hexione fled Linou, and met with Thelxiope and Xenokleia at their cave in the mountains between Elis and Arkadia.^[1]

However, she was tracked down by Kassandra. Trying to evade her, Hexione sent Kassandra deeper into the cave, hoping the 'sacred bear' the priestesses kept there, would kill the misthios. Despite her desire, Kassandra emerged victorious and confronted the priestesses about their duplicity.^[1]

Afterwards, Hexione nor her 'sisters' were ever seen again in Linou.^[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

In "A Matter of Faith", the Eagle Bearer can choose to either kill Hexione, or spare her. This doesn't seem to make a difference in regards to the ending of the questchain.
