Battle for Brest
The Battle for Brest was fought on the Western Front during World War II. It was part of the Allies' operation to liberate Europe from Nazi Germany.
Background[edit | edit source]
In the summer of 1944, after the Allied success in Normandy, German forces strategically retreated. Brest, a vital port city in northwestern France on the Brittany peninsula, gained significance. The Germans fortified the city, establishing a strong defensive position. With Allied advancements, Brest became a crucial target for its strategic role in resupplying the Allied forces.[1]
Battle[edit | edit source]
On 7 August 1944, American troops reached and surrounded Brest, facing a formidable struggle against the well-entrenched German garrison comprising Fallschirmjäger, Kriegsmarine personnel, and various military units, leading to a challenging storming of the city by the US VIII Corps.[1] On 9 September, members of the 2nd Infantry Division of the United States Armed Forces advanced on the city under heavy machine gun fire.[2] Following the battle, the city was completely destroyed, leaving only a few medieval stone-built fortifications intact; on 19 September, General Hermann-Bernhard Ramcke surrendered the city to the Americans after rendering the port facilities unusable, dashing hopes of their timely repair to aid the war effort.[1]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
In 2012, a photograph of US forces advancing on Brest was later acquired by the Assassin Clay Kaczmarek and hidden in the Animus for his successor, Desmond Miles to find. Desmond did so in September of that year.[3] The picture contained a hidden hexadecimal cipher that read "Antikythera mechanism, much older than 150 BCE." The picture was hidden with the Glyph puzzle titled "Infinite Knowledge".[2]
