Gyras (died 420s BCE) was an Achaian naval engineer who lived in Patrai during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography[edit | edit source]

During the Peloponnesian War, Gyras was noted for his techniques and abilities, said to be one of the best naval engineers in Greece. For this reason, Phila, the Magus of the Order of the Storm, hired him to create a new weapon for her flagship, the Skylla. Gyras was reluctant to build the weapon but was eventually forced into doing so in order to protect his wife Parmys.[1]

Due to the destructive nature of the weapon, the engineer eventually abandoned the project before its completion, and began looking for a way to escape Achaia with his wife. However, with the naval blockade placed on the region by the Order, the engineer was unable to do so.[1]

Eventually, Gyras was sought out by the Spartan misthios Kassandra, who had learned about his activities from Darius. Kassandra offered to help Gyras escape, though the engineer asked her to retrieve the plans from the fleet commander at the Temple of Artemis Laphria, so that he could install the weapon on Kassandra's ship and destroy the Order's blockade, thereby allowing him and Parmys to leave Achaia. After sending the misthios off, Gyras was assaulted and slain by Megakreon, a member of the Order who had learned of his treachery.[1]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Gyras' death was avenged almost immediately by Kassandra and Darius, who eliminated Megakreon and his guards.[1] Later on, his wife Parmys helped Kassandra by telling her where Gyras had hidden the code books needed to install his weapon, the Chimera's Breath.[2]
