The Krokottas Hyena was a legendary hyena who had made its way to the Kythera Island and made its lair in the Skandeia Bay region during the 5th century BCE.
History[edit | edit source]
Around the time of the Peloponnesian War, the gigantic hyena arrived on the shores of Kythera Island. The Daughters of Artemis noticed this, as well as the arrivals of other legendary animals, and their acting leader, Daphnae, went out to find the challenger the animals' reappearance foretold, as per the Daughters' traditions.[1]
Eventually, the hyena was hunted down by the Spartan misthios Kassandra. She took its pelt as proof of her success to Daphnae, the acting leader of the Daughters of Artemis.[2]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The Krokottas (Greek: Κροκόττας) was a mythical wolfdog, which was believed to inhabit India or Africa. Nowadays, scholars think that the legendary krokottas may be identified with the spotted hyena, whose scientific name, Crocuta crocuta, was given after the legendary beast. However, in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, the Krokottas Hyena is depicted in game as a striped hyena.
