Harpagos
Harpagos (died 420s BCE) was a member of the Order of the Ancients who served its leading branch, the Order of Dominion. He operated in Messenia, Greece, during the Peloponnesian War.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Placed in charge of the Order's weapons manufacturing lines in Aipeia, Harpagos became infamous for his contempt and cruelty towards the helot workers.[1] The helot Rhode especially seemed to have caught his eye while she had worked for him, and he did not hesitate to threaten her or command her to be executed for stealing bread. He similarly had no qualms about making the children work as hard as the adults.[2]
When Harpagos learned that Rhode had fled her execution at the agora, he took it upon himself to face her, only to encounter the misthios Kassandra. Despite having been warned about the misthios, Harpagos treated her with the same contempt as the helots, and was killed.[2]
