Sack of Rome (1527)
The Sack of Rome on 1527 was part of the larger War of the League of Cognac between Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and the League of Cognac, which included the Papal States under Pope Clement VII.[1] Following the capture of the city by largely unpaid Landsknechte, the troops mutinied and stormed Rome to begin looting.[2] During the chaos, Clement VII was taken prisoner in the Castel Sant'Angelo, though managed to escape his captors disguised as a tradesman.[3] It took until February 1528 for the army to withdraw towards Naples, with Rome's population having dropped to a fifth of its size prior to the attack.[1]
In 2012, Abstergo Industries added a mnemonic set to Project Legacy themed around many different "Sacks of Rome" and added Charles V to it to represent the 410 event.[4] In 2016, a group of Assassins reliving memories of Rome during the Roman Kingdom experienced a glitch that transferred them to Rome during the 1527 sacking, with them having to escape the simulation through a rift that appeared atop the Pantheon.[2]
