Helheim, also known as Hel, was the castle of the Isu Hel, daughter of Loki and Aletheia, in the realm of Niflheim and one of the Nine Realms in Norse mythology.
Mythology
Helheim fell into human folklore as one of the aspects of the afterlife in Norse mythology.[1] It was ruled by the goddess Hel and was a realm of cold where the sick, old and criminals went when they died.[2]
History
During the Isu Era, the Æsir leader Odin conceeded authority to Hel over the territory of Niflheim, trapping her inside in the process.[3][4] Eventually, Hel constructed her personal residence with the help of dishonored engineers, who installed a portal system for her to travel within the palace and her domain.[5]
Following that, Helheim was considered as a possible alternative sanctuary for Hel's older brother, whose existence was seen as ill-omen, as a means to escape detection by Odin, while he was hiding in the Well of Urðr, but she informed their father that Fenrir would not be safe there, forcing Loki to cast the idea aside.[6]
Years later, Baldr was captured by the Muspels during their invasion of Svartálfaheimr, with Loki telling them how the use of mistletoe would be effective in killing the apparently invulnerable Asgardian.[7] When the Muspel cientist Calder and the Múspellsheimr's war lord's wife, Sinmara, suceeded in torturing him, they absorbed a part of Baldr's consciousness into the Salakar, an ancient elven artifact, on Surtr's bidding and sent the other half to Helheim and to Hel's possession.[8]
Due to this, a grieving Odin embarked on a journey to infiltrate the region in order to confront its queen and retrieve Baldr's consciousness from her,[9] planning to find a way to ressuscitate him afterwards.[10]
