While warriors who died in battle could look forward to feasting in the hall of Valhalla, those wo died of sickness or old age went to Hel, or Helheim.

The cold and misty realm of Niflheim, pictured here, was another final destination. Murderes, oath-breakers, and traitors were punished for their crimes by being sent to this cruel land.
