Attika is a historical region and peninsula in Greece projecting into the Aegean Sea which encompasses the country's capital, Athens. As such, it is home to some of the most iconic Hellenic landmarks, and its dry summer climate is archetypal of the beautiful environment popularly associated with Greece. Along with Megaris and Boeotia, Attika was part of the Attikan Peninsula.[1]

By the time of the Peloponnesian War, Attika was a heavily-trafficked area with Athens as the largest city in Greece. With the conflict pitting Athens-led Delian League against Sparta's Peloponnesian League, the peninsula was at the center of the conflict.[1] The Spartan army set up multiple siege camps along the western approaches to Athens, as well as the Cemetery Road. Despite the threat of this army, Athens and Attika at large remained unconquered for the majority of the conflict.[2]
