Watanabe Moritsuna was a Japanese samurai of the Watanabe clan who served under Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Biography
In 1560, Watanabe Moritsuna was in a village near Okazaki Castle in Mikawa[1] as he was ordered to find a highly skilled kunoichi for his daimyō Matsudaira.[2] While fighting a drunk, he noticed that the young Hattori Hanzō was watching him and called him out.[1] While Hanzō tried to deny his presence, Moritsuna asserted that he liked a good chase. Chasing Hanzō by the rooftops, Moritsuna challenged Hanzō to a fight. Although taunting him for his skill, he was soon cuaght off-guard by Hanzō's quick thinking.[2]
With Hanzō passed his test, Moritsuna introduced himself, to which Hanzō apologized for the remarks earlier. Moritsuan also apologized for his test and stated that he needed Hanzō for a task.[2] Walking to meet Matsudaira, Moritsuna told Hanzō that this mission was dangerous and it may affect not only his standing, but his family's as well.[3] Entering into Matsudaira's residence, Moritsuna and Hanzō met with Matsudaira, who confided in both of them of their secret mission.[4]
Matsudaira soon informed them that his wife Sena and his children Matsudaira Nobuyasu and Kamehime are detained at Imagawa Mansion under Imagawa Ujizane's watch and tasked Moritsuna and Hanzō to rescue them without any incidence. When Hanzō divulged his real mission, Matsudaira informed them all how Ujizane has also received a Jesuit priest recently and how he carried a red cross around his neck. With this, Hanzō accepted to join Moritsuna in Matsudaira's mission.[4]
While getting ready, Moritsuna asked Hanzō about his hidden blade, to which Hanzō divulged his alliance and his adoration of Tsuyu, who gave him the blade in Iga. However, they were both startled when Hanzō nearly killed himself by accident with the blade. With this shock, Hanzō and Moritsuna regressed back and began to plan their rescue mission.[4]
