Kos is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Turkey that is part of the Southern Sporades archipelago alongside its sister island, Samos.[1]
History
Sometime prior to the Peloponnesian War, the island of Kos was assaulted by pirates. After establishing a presence on the island, the pirates discovered that the population was drastically dwindling due to a shortage of food. To rectify this crisis, they went to the extremes of forcing all inhabitants older than sixty to commit suicide by drinking concoctions of deadly hemlock. While this ensured the survival of the rest of the population, it left behind a foul stench of death in the island's interior.[2] The island was surrounded by crystal clear, turquoise waters and palm trees which produced a veneer of paradise.
The birthplace of Hippokrates, popularly heralded as the founder of Western medicine, Kos' main industry in the 5th century BCE was medicine itself, gaining it its epithet of "The School of Medicine".[3][4]
During the Peloponnesian War, the island was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra, where she reunited with her longlife friend, Markos, who needed help being defended by Kosian thugs called the Cerberos.
