Helheim, also known as Hel, was one of the Nine Realms. The area fell under the purview of Hel, daughter of Loki and Aletheia.
Helheim was considered as a possible alternative sanctuary for Hel's older brother Fenrir, whose existence was seen as an ill-omen, during his time hidden in the Well of Urðr as a means to escape detection by Odin in Ásgarðr, but she informed their father that Fenrir would not be safe there, forcing Loki to cast the idea aside.[1]
Mythology
Helheim fell into human folklore as one of the aspects of the afterlife in Norse mythology.[2] It was ruled by the goddess Hel and was a realm of cold where the sick, old and criminals went when they died.[3]
