The banner of the Daughters of Artemis

The Daughters of Artemis were a tribal society of female warriors who worshipped Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt and Moon.

The Daughters of Artemis saw themselves as protectors of the land's flora and fauna and made use of animals like bears and wolves to protect it. They were also skillful archers.[1]

Description

The Daughters of Artemis favored hunting camps set deep in the woods or near places sacred to Artemis. Occasionally, these camps became larger settlements, most notable being their original home of Huntress Village on the island of Chios, and the village of Lamia in Malis.[1]

The emblem of the Daughters of Artemis was a stylized figure of a woman drawing a bow, presumably a depiction of Artemis. They wore furs and animal skins, and had often painted red markings on their skin.[1]

To the Daughters of Artemis, the Hind of Keryneia was a sacred creature.[2]

History

In 431 BCE Daphnae, the leader of the Daughters at the time, tasked the Spartan misthios Kassandra to hunt several legendary creatures found across Greece.[3] Daphnae later revealed that this process was to select a new candidate to lead the Daughters of Artemis; it would culminate in the challenger and the ruling leader fighting to the death. The winner would be the leader of the Daughters, until another challenger arose.[4]

Behind the scenes

  • The Daughters of Artemis have three distinct roles: Huntress, Pathfinder (accompanied by a wolf), and Beastmaster (accompanied by a bear).
  • In The Art of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, the Daughters are referred to as the "Huntresses of Artemis."
