A view of the Huntress Village

The Huntress Village was a large settlement of the Daughters of Artemis in the Hunted Forest of Artemis on the island of Chios, Greece. The encampment was connected to a series of caves, including the Cave of Potnia Theron, Cave of Arktoi, and Artemis Cave.

History[edit | edit source]

Established by the Daughters as one of their main locations, the Huntress Village was closely guarded and fiercely protected.[1]

Despite this, during the Peloponnesian War, the village was visited multiple times by the Spartan misthios Kassandra. Once was when a rejected candidate to be a Daughter of Artemis asked Kassandra to help her create an outfit that would let her infiltrate the Daughters and pretend to be one of them.[2] Another time, the Lesbian Bryce told Kassandra that the Daughters had in their keeping a key with the help of which they could enter the Petrified Temple in the depths of the Petrified Valley on Lesbos.[3][4]

The third time, Kassandra met the acting leader of the Daughters, Daphnae, on a ledge overlooking the village on its southern borders. Introducing her to the gathered Daughters, Daphnae then explained to Kassandra they had to duel to the death in order to solve who would lead the Daughters, as per the Daughters' traditions.[5]
