The Demolition of the Machines was a series of events in which the Master Assassin, Ezio Auditore da Firenze was tasked with the destruction of four War Machines that Leonardo da Vinci had created for Cesare Borgia to use in his conquest of Italy.
A direct sequel to Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood again focuses on Desmond Miles and the other modern-day Assassins as they flee to Monteriggioni to escape the Templars' attack. Once there, they establish a new hideout in the Sanctuary underneath the ruins of the Villa Auditore. Inside of the Animus 2.0, Desmond takes control of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, now a legendary Master Assassin, as he strives to rebuild the Assassin Brotherhood in Rome. In order to do so, he must bring down a tyrannical Templar family, the Borgia, and guide the city into the true wealth and splendor of the Renaissance.
Reunion
Whilst patrolling Rome's Central district, Ezio heard a voice beckoning to him. As he went to investigate the source of the voice, Ezio discovered that it belonged to his old friend Leonardo da Vinci.
Gameplay
Ezio and Leonardo then warmly hugged each other, glad to be reunited. However, Leonardo then asked for Ezio's forgiveness, as the Borgia had forced him into their service as a military engineer. He elaborated, saying that Cesare had made use of his skill to design pistols and other weapons for his guards, as well as four well-designed war machines, which were to aid in the Borgia's campaign to conquer Italy.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is a non-linear “sandbox-style” video game with similarities to its predecessors. Like the previous installments, the gameplay's core mechanics are based on parkour movements, crowd-blending stealth, assassinations, and a melee fighting system. The combat system features several improvements, and for the first time in the series, the game offers a multiplayer mode alongside 40+ hours of single-player gameplay.
The game introduces a new management system in which Ezio can take on Assassin Apprentices. They can be recruited by destroying any of the twelve Borgia towers located throughout Rome and then rescuing a disgruntled citizen from the guards. The novice Assassins can then be sent on assignments across Europe or called into battle to assist Ezio, both actions allowing them to earn experience. Experience can then be used to upgrade both armor and weapondry. It is possible for an Apprentice to die while completing an assignment, in which case they will not return. New abilities and weapons are introduced as well, including Leonardo da Vinci’s parachute, poison darts, a crossbow, and the ability to throw heavy weapons such as axes.
Warning Ezio that each of these machines must be destroyed, Leonardo provided him with a list of the Templars overseeing the mechanical constructions. Before their parting, Leonardo also cautioned Ezio that Cesare intended to enforce his armies with the machines, thus they needed to be dismantled before they could be set into circulation. Ezio then assured his old friend that he would take care of the designs, as well as the machines themselves.
Brotherhood's primary setting, Rome, has fallen into disrepair under the corrupt rule of the Borgia family and the Templars. And like the town of Monteriggioni in Assassin's Creed II, Ezio is able to invest and refurbish areas of the city witness its development and unlock rewards. Ezio has to conquer and destroy Borgia towers to free city zones from the family's influence. Completing this unlocks new missions and opportunities such as recruiting new Apprentices to the Assassin Order.
Rome is the biggest city ever created after the first two installments (Rome is three times bigger than Florence from Assassin's Creed II) and includes four districts: Vaticano, Centro, Campagna, and Antico. Unlike the previous installments, travel between different cities or regions is no longer present, as most of the action in the game takes place around the city of Rome. Instead, a series of tunnels network throughout the city, allowing Ezio to travel to different sectors of the city with ease.
The combat system has been modified so that striking first and offensive actions are now more deadly in Brotherhood than previous games where counter-attacks were the most efficient. Before, this made Ezio wait until the AI struck, which slowed down the pace of fighting. The AI in this game is thus more aggressive and enemies can attack simultaneously. To dispatch them, Ezio can use melee and ranged weapons at the same time, as well as the new ability to use the hidden pistol in combat. After killing one enemy, the player can start an execution streak to dispatch multiple enemies quickly. Ezio can throw heavy weapons (axes, spears, and swords) at his enemies. There are also new enemy archetypes in addition to those seen in Assassin's Creed II such as horsemen, arquebusiers, Papal guards, and others.
Horses play a larger role in Brotherhood, not only used as a means of transport, but as a component of acrobatic sequences and advanced combat as well, allowing ranged weapons to be used while riding them. Brotherhood also introduces various types of horse-related assassinations, featuring horse-to-horse assassinations. There are environmental objects like the flower pot in Assassin's Creed II to move faster inside the city as well as new objects such as lifts to quickly scale high buildings or structures.
Modern Warfare
Unlike previous installments, Desmond can leave the Animus at almost any time, allowing him to explore the present-day town of Monteriggioni. Ezio is also offered virtual training, a mini-game where he may test his free-running or combat skills.
After meeting with Leonardo, Ezio hunted down the Templars who knew of the machines' locations. After searching every corner of Rome, he managed to locate each of them, and obtained information that would lead him to four different locations outside of Rome: Colli Albani, Napoli, Valnerina, and Monte Circeo.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer/ACBH
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is the first game in the main series to feature a multiplayer mode with players being Templars in training at the Abstergo facility. They use the Animi (plural for Animus) seen at the beginning of Assassin's Creed II to access memories of old Templars and to acquire their skills using the bleeding effect. There are eight game modes: Wanted, Alliance, Manhunt, Chest Capture, Advanced Wanted, Advanced Alliance, Escort, and Assassinate and different maps, including the areas from the second and the third game like Florence, as well as new maps like Rome, Castel Gandolfo, Siena, and Mont Saint-Michel.
Full of Lead
The gameplay in the multiplayer mode is similar to the core gameplay of the series as players are required to use their assassination and stealth skills. The players must hunt down targets while being hunted themselves. Players earn points by performing assassinations, defending against pursuers, attaining bonuses, or completing mode-specific objectives.
In pursuit of the first war machine, Ezio left Rome, and journeyed through the countryside to Colli Albani. There, he infiltrated the factory of chariot-mounted machine guns, and discovered that various working prototypes of the machine were being manufactured.
The multiplayer mode also includes a leveling system, which allows players to unlock rewards by earning experience points during the matches and gaining new levels. Players can then unlock abilities, perks, and streaks. Abilities are active skills, which can be used again only after a cool down time. Perks are passive skills, which can be equipped before the match and they are active all the time. Streaks are bonuses awarded for reaching certain number of successful or failed contracts.
Stealthily avoiding any attention from the patrolling guards, Ezio reached a small workshop, where the machine's designs and blueprints had been posted. Burning the sketch of the design with a nearby torch, Ezio then proceeded to make his way to the main courtyard, where a functioning machine gun was under heavy guard.
Game modes
Free-For-All
Wanted
In Wanted, at least six players are on a map where they must find and assassinate each other. Each player is given another player as a target. The goal is to find and kill a target without being seen or killed by the player's own pursuer or pursuers. If the player breaks cover, they are more easily spotted by pursuer or target alike, sometimes resulting in a chase. The player with the highest score at the end of the session wins. Players will lose their contract if they kill an NPC, are stunned by their target, or if their target is killed by another player. A player cannot kill another player who is not the target, but they can stun any hunter.
Dodging the eyes of the posted guards, Ezio made his way to the stacks of gunpowder barrels piled beside the machine and lit a fuse leading into them. As he sprinted away and hid at a safe distance, the resulting explosion of the gunpowder shattered the machine gun and immediately killed the men guarding it. However, the noise alerted the other guards who were within the building itself, and they swiftly made off with a second, horse-drawn prototype, attempting to salvage the project.
Advanced Wanted mode is a variant of Wanted mode, with differences including an increased amount of NPCs on the map to make it difficult to pick out targets, and a less accurate compass. There is generally more stealth involved in this mode than in basic wanted.
Ezio promptly ran across the rooftops and mounted a nearby horse to give chase. Pursuing the machine gun through the woods and dodging the rapid bullet rounds fired at him, Ezio managed to catch up to the chariot and kill both the driver and the gunman posted on it. Though he was able to commandeer the machine, he was closely followed by several mounted guards and arquebusiers. As he fled them, he managed to hold several of them back by slamming into them with the sides of the carriage.
Assassinate

However, as he drove the chariot deeper into the countryside, the number of guards only seemed to increase, thus Ezio took control of the machine gun itself. Shooting horses and riders alike, and only suffering minor set backs as the horses pulling the machine veered off the road, Ezio was able to successfully hold off his pursuers.
The Assassinate mode is similar to Wanted, but instead of target contracts being assigned to players, all players are fair game. Players must identify other player characters and lock on before assassinating. Because two players can kill each other, whoever locks on first becomes the hunter and the other becomes the target. The standard compass found in Wanted is replaced by directional arrows based on proximity that grow to become arcs around the perimeter of the compass as other players near, and will eventually create a full circle when other players are very close. As in other modes, the player with the highest score at the end of the session is the winner.
Upon escaping from the remaining guards, Ezio detached the pair of horses from the carriage, and rode to safety on the back of one as he ignited the gunpowder-laden chariot with his pistol. Just before destroying the machine gun, he proclaimed that the world would be better without it, before finally returning to Rome.
Co-op
Alliance
In Alliance, there are three teams, each limited to two players, both of which use the same persona. The point of this mode is to get more points than the other teams, but each team is chased by another and is only allowed to kill one specific team (not the team chasing them, but they will be able to stun the team hunting them). This mode encourages players to work together, as teammates can help each other or they can assassinate their targets simultaneously.

The Advanced Alliance mode is a variant of Alliance mode, however the players' compasses as well as target engagement becomes more difficult, similar to the Advanced Wanted mode.
The Flying Demon
Team
Manhunt
Addio, amico mio! (Goodbye, my friend!)
In 1503, Ezio journeyed to Valnerina in order to dismantle and destroy a more technologically advanced version of Leonardo's Flying Machine, which was referred to as a Bomber. Upon arriving at the small settlement, Ezio scouted the town market place for the Borgia weapons engineer, who knew of the location of both the designs and the machine itself. Upon finally locating the man, Ezio tailed him to a secluded area, where he interrogated him.
In Manhunt there are two teams of four. One team is the hunters, the other is the hunted. Each team is a specific character and takes turns being the hunter and the hunted. Hunters obtain points by assassinations, while the hunted obtain points from escapes, stuns, and remaining hidden. The team with the highest score wins.
Under pressure, the engineer finally confessed the location of the designs, which were in the workshop near his house, and of the bomber, which was posted atop a tower in a nearby Borgia fortress. Allowing the engineer to flee, Ezio made his way to the engineer's house to burn the plans before setting off to infiltrate the fortress.
Chest Capture
Climbing up the obscured eastern walls, Ezio crossed battlements and courtyard rooftops, avoiding the guard's attention until he climbed and entered the central tower. As night fell, Ezio made his way to the interior of the tower, and finally caught sight of the new Flying Machine. Bypassing the four guards on duty and climbing to the pinnacle point of the structure, Ezio noticed several workshops spread across the Valnerina countryside, where the Borgia were attempting to manufacture various other war machines for Cesare's wars across Europe.
In Chest Capture there are two teams of four. One team is the hunters, and the other is the hunted who need to steal chests by standing close to them. Each team is a specific character and takes turns being the hunter and the hunted. Hunters obtain points by assassinations, while the hunted obtain points from escapes, stuns, and stealing chests. The team with the highest score wins.
Concluding that such production needed to be stopped, Ezio flew off the perch of the tower and once again glided through the night sky. Using the fire canon mounted upon the back of the machine, he periodically set fires to the ground to keep himself in the air, as well as used it to destroy the nearby factories. The commotion alerted the surviving workshops, and several wagons attempted to bring salvaged materials to the safety of the fortress. However, Ezio was still able to intercept and destroy all the wagons, and the materials they transported.
Escort
Immediately after this, a single mounted courier fled the fortress in order to alert Cesare of the destruction Ezio was causing; though he too was skillfully shot down. Leaving the burning countryside behind, Ezio proceeded to destroy the Flying Machine by crashing it into a nearby archer tower, leaping out of it to safety just before the impact. Finally bidding his "old friend" a goodbye as it burned, Ezio subsequently returned to Rome.
The Escort mode has one team of four players protecting a wandering NPC while the other team of four tries to assassinate him. There are two NPCs to protect at a time and they walk through a series of checkpoints, which are visible to both teams. When an escorted NPC is killed, another is Synchronized. This mode has two rounds with each team playing once as escort and once as assassins.

Let us see if you can bite your master's hand, shall we?
Upon discovering its location, Ezio proceeded to go after the Naval Cannon, which was being kept on the docks of Naples. Discovering that the fortified dry dock and surrounding area were heavily guarded by the Borgia, he began his search for the engineer. While scouting the outer docks, Ezio overheard a guard instructing his comrades that only a man known as Eduardo was allowed to examine the mechanism they were guarding, and make any final improvements.
Plot
Tracking down and seizing the engineer by the collar, the Assassin demanded the plans for the mechanism, however, Eduardo quickly confirmed that Ezio was the Assassin, and offered his aid in destroying the machine. Ezio thanked him, and allowed him to 'escort' Ezio to the plans by gondola.
Using the Animus 2.0, Desmond attempts to relive one of the late memories of Ezio, hoping that it would reveal the location of the Apple of Eden and thereby allowing him to prevent the disaster foretold by Those Who Came Before. However, instead of entering the memory set in 1507, Ezio is forced into a different one, occurring during a battle in Viana. From there, as Ezio looks upon the besieged Viana Castle, he recalls the similar events of the Siege of Monteriggioni and forces Desmond even back further- to a memory from 1499.
Ezio followed Eduardo through a series of narrow canals, traversing the beams overhead in order to avoid confronting guards. After opening several gates for the engineer, Eduardo soon departed after leading the Assassin to the entrance to an old store room, through which he could reach the dry dock.
As Ezio leaves the Vatican Vault after listening to Minerva's message, he discovers that Rodrigo Borgia has disappeared. Also noticing that the Staff had been left behind, he attempts to extract it from where it had been forced into the floor; however, it descends into the ground and is sealed away. Mario Auditore then calls down to him from the entrance, and he and Ezio fight their way out of the Vatican. Ezio, unable to decide whether or not to cast the Apple into the Tiber River, gives it to Mario for safe keeping. The two then ride back to Monteriggioni on horseback.

Assassinating the nearby guards, Ezio finally reached the room where the naval cannon was being kept, where he overheard several guards noting that the cannon was fully operational. Ezio immediately charged forward, directly assaulting the soldiers and dispatching them without effort. After burning the plans as usual, he then flooded the dry dock in order to take the naval cannon into open waters.
However, Ezio soon learns that the Templar threat has diminished little, when Cesare Borgia, son of Rodrigo Borgia, lays siege to Monteriggioni. Cesare's army of soldiers, siege towers, and cannons attack in full force, destroying much of the city and the Villa Auditore. The assault ends with Monteriggioni in ruins, Ezio severely wounded by arquebusiers, and Mario's murder at the hands of Cesare. Ezio attempts to follow his uncle's murderer on horseback, but passes out on the road to Rome due to his injuries.
Catching sight of several Templar war ships moored in the harbor, the Assassin proceeded to use the cannon to set fire to their sails, dodging the retaliating arrows and cannonballs. After bringing down each ship, he finally turned and pointed the mounted cannon down towards the center of the gondola. Muttering for Leonardo's forgiveness, he fired the cannon into itself and dived into the sea before it exploded.
At this point, Desmond awakens from the Animus and finds that he and the rest of the modern-day Assassins have arrived at the Villa Auditore in Monteriggioni, their last safehouse in Italy. Lucy Stillman explaines that they need to recover Ezio's Apple of Eden, as she suspected that Minerva had altered it somehow when she had touched it in the Vault.

Hell on Wheels
Desmond, Lucy, Shaun, and Rebecca then headed for the Villa, seeking the safety of the underground Sanctuary, which would keep them hidden from Abstergo's cell towers. However, as the door was locked, Desmond and Lucy left to discover another way in. After making their way through the secret passage that Ezio and the citizens had used to flee the Borgia attack, they opened the way for Shaun and Rebecca.

I wish I could keep you.

After disabling three of the war machines, Cesare's military advancements had become extremely limited. However, Ezio had one more machine to dismantle, the "centerpiece" of Cesare's army, the Tank. To destroy it, Ezio departed Rome for the Borgia arms workshop in Monte Circeo.
Inside the Sanctuary, Desmond saw an aged Ezio due to the bleeding effect, and deduced that he must have returned to the villa many years after the attack, though for an unknown purpose. He also found a symbol that Ezio had drawn on the wall and, using Eagle Vision, saw a series of numbers hidden underneath.
The four of them then set up the Animus 2.0, and Desmond returned to Ezio's memories, with Lucy believing that improving his Synchronization with Ezio would allow Desmond to access the memory revealing the location of the Apple.
Ezio regained consciousness in a small house in Rome, where Margherita dei Campi, who had been tending to him, told him that a man had brought him there, and had supplied him with new armor and clothing. After leaving the house and receiving medicine from a doctor, Ezio left to meet with Niccolò Machiavelli.
Through Machiavelli Ezio discovered that Rome was in disrepair, and that the citizens were being oppressed by the Borgia. Later, he would also stumble across the Followers of Romulus, and explore one of their lairs inside Nero's Golden Palace.
Basing himself on Tiber Island in the center of the city, Ezio began his mission to rid the city of the influence of Cesare and his generals. To do so, Ezio reestablished relationships between his Assassins Guild and the other guilds in the city, namely that of the Courtesans (led by Madonna Solari, and later Claudia Auditore and then Rosa), the Thieves (led by La Volpe), and the Mercenaries (led by Bartolomeo d'Alviano).
Ezio then begins to rebuild the Brotherhood by recruiting Apprentice, who were made up of both distressed citizens who wished to liberate their city, and young novice Assassins, such as Francesco Vecellio. After the recruits had completed their training, he placed them in teams and sent them on missions across Europe.
Arriving in the Borgia-occupied settlement, Ezio sought the engineer. Though he located the man in the outskirts of the fortress, he was protected by a bodyguard, preventing the Assassin from extorting any information from him. He thus merely tailed the engineer from behind, listening to his target converse with his guard regarding the machine's safety.
Ezio then began to break down the Borgia influence in Rome by destroying several Borgia captains and their captains. He also sabotaged Cesare's forces by striking at their arsenal, their military funding, and their support from the French forces. To do so, he destroyed the war machines of Leonardo da Vinci, and assassinated two of Cesare's key generals, his Banker, Juan Borgia, and the French general, Octavian de Valois.
As the engineer entered the heavily guarded entrance of the factory, Ezio quickly took an alternative route up the eastern walls, through a damaged section in the stones. Dropping down to where the engineer was standing, he confronted him in a fistfight, and soon the Assassin came out on top. Not wanting to become any more injured, the engineer told Ezio that the machine required three people to operate it, and that three mercenaries were being held captive in the fortress for such a purpose.
Afterwards, he was informed that Pietro Rossi, an actor and Lucrezia Borgia's lover, possessed a key to the Castel Sant'Angelo. Knowing that he would need it in order to assassinate Cesare and Rodrigo successfully, Ezio tailed Micheletto Corella, Cesare's personal assassin, who had been sent to kill Pietro. After Ezio had rescued him, both from being stabbed with a spear during his play, and from the ailments of poison, Pietro handed the Assassin the key to the Castello.
Ezio allowed the engineer to escape, and proceeded to make his way to the opposite end of the factory. Finding the plans at a small workshop, Ezio burned them using a torch, and made his way to the captured mercenaries. Unfortunately, one of the mercenaries appeared to have died in captivity, as Ezio noticed his limp body slumped against the back wall. Dispatching the patrolling guard, Ezio asked the remaining two mercenaries where Leonardo's machine was hidden. One instructed Ezio to free them, so they would be able to show him the hidden entrance they had discovered. The Assassin obliged, however, they were ambushed twice by a large number of Borgia soldiers. Despite this, Ezio and the mercenaries eventually overpowered them and proceeded.
Upon completion of these tasks, Ezio inducted Claudia into the Assassin Order, and was also elected by Machiavelli to be Il Mentore of the Assassin Order.
Once led to the entrance to a network of underground tunnels, one of the mercenaries commented that Cesare intended to issue a surprise assault on Sicily with the tanks. Ezio then assured him that they, together, would prevent it. Traveling through the deep passages, Ezio used his freerunning abilities to open several gates for the less-talented mercenaries until they reached the cavern where a working tank was stored.
Soon afterwards, Ezio infiltrated the Castel, where he witnessed the murder of Rodrigo by his son, Cesare. Cesare forced the location of the Apple of Eden from Lucrezia, and hurried to retrieve it from Basilica di San Pietro. However, Ezio successfully reached the Apple before Cesare, and subsequently used it to demilitarize the remnants of Cesare's army.
In one last battle, Ezio and his fellow Assassins fought Cesare and his surviving men at the gates of Rome. Cesare was then arrested by Fabio Orsini by the order of the new Pope, though not before commenting that he would not be in chains for long and that he would never be killed by any man.

Ezio and his new allies took control of the tank, and staged a direct assault against the main weapons factory. Easily plowing through the countryside with the powerful weapon, they fired upon any mounted cannons, foot soldiers, or other tank prototypes that blocked their path.
Sometime later, Ezio, troubled by Cesare's comments, discussed them with Leonardo, who suggested using the Apple to find out if what he said was true. Ezio was hesitant, but decided to take his advice, and discovered that Cesare would indeed free himself from prison. Ezio declared that he needed to leave at once, reassuring Leonardo's concerns for the Assassin Guild he was leaving behind by saying, "I built this Brotherhood to last, with or without me."
Blowing the gates of the main factory open and entering the courtyard, they discovered several damaged siege towers, some cannons in the process of being repaired, and several working and half-built tanks. After destroying the other war machines and siege weapons within the fortress walls, the mercenaries took their leave, and Ezio climbed up onto the walls of the factory. There, he expressed his wish to keep his tank, but nonetheless fired a mounted cannon at it, causing it to explode, and marking the end of the war machines' reign of terror.
In 1507, Ezio finally tracked Cesare down at the Siege of Viana, in Spain. Ezio fought through the infantry, and finally managed to corner Cesare on the castle wall. There, in a climactic battle, Ezio managed to destroy Cesare's armor and ultimately defeat him. Though Cesare insisted that he would not die in the hands of man, Ezio then left him to the "hands of fate," and threw him from the battlements to his death.
Afterwards, Ezio took the Apple of Eden into the Colosseum Vault under Santa Maria Aracoeli, within the Temple of Juno.
Desmond emerged from the Animus shortly after reliving this memory, listening to his teammates deducing a way to get into the Vault. Just as Rebecca mentioned that they needed a spoken password to enter it, a blackout occurred, cutting them off from using the Animus to find out. However, Desmond realized that the symbol he had seen on the door of the Vault was the same one he had seen drawn on the villa wall. Shaun discovered that the sequence of numbers hidden behind the symbol referred to the seventy-two names of God, meaning the password was 72.
The Assassins then drove to the Colosseo in Rome, and Desmond separated from the others to find a way into the Vault. As he travelled the underground passageway, he encountered another of Those Who Came Before, Juno, who spoke at length of the downfall of humankind.
Arriving inside the Santa Maria Aracoeli, Desmond unlocked the door for his teammates and, shortly afterwards, witnessed a memory of Ezio free-running through the church. He followed him and activated a system of bars and levers, finally causing a small pedestal to emerge from the floor. Placing his hand on it, Desmond activated the floor, lowering the four of them down to the door of the Vault.
Desmond spoke the password, and the door opened to reveal a large empty chamber, with a tall platform raised in the middle, upon which the Apple awaited. Desmond activated the staircase up to it by jumping across a series of pillars; while Juno's voice echoed through the cavern as she spoke cryptically of humans, the Pieces of Eden and a "sixth sense." However, Desmond was apparently the only one who could hear her.

Once the Assassins had access to the platform, Desmond touched the Apple, and a series of holographic symbols appeared.
Shaun mentioned that two of the most distinct ones, the Phrygian Cap and the Masonic Eye, only came together in one place; however, when Desmond picked up the Apple, time seemed to stop and he found himself controlled by Juno. Despite his resistance, Juno forced him to draw his hidden blade and stab Lucy in the abdomen. The two then fell to the ground unconscious, with blood pooling around Lucy.
Later, William M. and another unknown male could be heard speaking, saying that Desmond had gone into shock. William ordered the other man to put Desmond back into the Animus, despite the other's protests on how badly the Animus had affected Desmond already. Later Desmond entered a coma, though William claimed that Desmond would live through it.

A new Assassin's Creed episode featuring multiplayer was announced during Ubisoft's 2009 fiscal third quarter results while not revealing its name. In early May 2010, a GameStop employee published on the internet some images of a pre-order box featuring the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood title while Ubisoft was teasing the game on Facebook and Twitter. Ubisoft then confirmed the authenticity of these pictures. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood has not been numbered unlike Assassin's Creed II because players, and even developers themselves would have expected a new setting and a new ancestor while this is only the continuation of Ezio's story.
The game was developed primarily by Ubisoft Montreal in Canada, but production was aided in part by four other Ubisoft developers: Annecy, Singapore, Bucharest and Québec City. The multiplayer mode is mainly developed by Ubisoft Annecy, the studio responsible for creating the multiplayer mode in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Ubisoft also announced plans for downloadable content after the game's launch. Two sets of free DLC have already been released under the names "Animus Project Update 1.0" and "Animus Project Update 2.0". The "Animus Project Update 2.0" was released in January 2011, was also free, and included another map, mode and the introduction of a player grading system. From the perspective of performance, Ubisoft have commented that they hope the gaps between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions will be even smaller with Brotherhood.
Following the destruction of the final war machine, Ezio returned to Rome, where he and Leonardo once again met secretly. Leonardo told Ezio that news had reached him of the demise of his creations, and he had thus had time to work on something special for Ezio. There, he gave his friend a gift, which would allow him to slow down the speed of his fall when jumping from rooftops. Ezio thanked his old friend, and the two parted on good terms.

"I have constructed weapons for all the Borgiaguards, and other terrible monstrosities beside."
Whilst patrolling Rome's Central district, Ezio heard a voice beckoning to him. As he went to investigate the source of the voice, Ezio discovered that it belonged to his old friend Leonardo da Vinci.
Ezio and Leonardo reunited.
Modern Warfare
After meeting with Leonardo, Ezio hunted down the Templars who knew of the machines' locations. After searching every corner of Rome, he managed to locate each of them, and obtained information that would lead him to four different locations outside of Rome: Colli Albani, Napoli, Valnerina, and Monte Circeo.

―Ezio, before finally destroying the machine gun.[src]
In pursuit of the first war machine, Ezio left Rome, and journeyed through the countryside to Colli Albani. There, he infiltrated the factory of chariot-mounted machine guns, and discovered that various working prototypes of the machine were being manufactured.

Ezio followed Eduardo through a series of narrow canals, traversing the beams overhead in order to avoid confronting guards. After opening several gates for the engineer, Eduardo soon departed after leading the Assassin to the entrance to an old store room, through which he could reach the dry dock.

Ezio and his new allies took control of the tank, and staged a direct assault against the main weapons factory. Easily plowing through the countryside with the powerful weapon, they fired upon any mounted cannons, foot soldiers, or other tank prototypes that blocked their path.
The Reward
Following the destruction of the final war machine, Ezio returned to Rome, where he and Leonardo once again met secretly. Leonardo told Ezio that news had reached him of the demise of his creations, and he had thus had time to work on something special for Ezio. There, he gave his friend a gift, which would allow him to slow down the speed of his fall when jumping from rooftops. Ezio thanked his old friend, and the two parted on good terms.
