Rise and Fall of Altaïr

What follows is for preview purposes only. The work showcased below is not finished. It is here to provide War Clown with an idea of how this project is progressing, as it is not yet ready to be published on the article itself.

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad's rise and fall within the ranks of the Assassin Order, was first spurred by the events that transpired within Solomon's Temple. Altaïr fell from the rank of Master Assassin to that of Novice – thanks to his neglect of the tenets of the The Creed – before again rising through the tiers of the Order. Ultimately, this chain of events led to massive disruption for the Templars; their plans laid to waste. An Apple of Eden also fell into Altaïr's possession, along with his ascension to the rank of Grand Master.

The underbelly of Solomon's Temple – Altaïr was a Master Assassin, and proud of it. Full of himself, the Assassin believed he could do no wrong. On this particular occasion, he was accompanied by Malik and Kadar A-Sayf. They had been sent by Al Mualim to investigate the aforementioned temple, as he believed the Templars had found something of importance underneath it. The three men entered the temple, and came across an old man, who Altaïr killed, almost immediately. Malik attempted to remind him of the Creed the Assassins kept, which Altaïr was supposed to keep, but Altaïr stopped him - in his opinion, he could do no wrong.

The Traitor

Despite Altaïr's success in driving Robert de Sable and his forces away, he still had to stand trial for his failure in Solomon's Temple. Al Mualim publicly accused him and saw the same arrogance Malik witnessed. He publicly repeated all the three tenets of the Creed to Altaïr and laid the accusations of each one he broke. Killing the old man in the temple, was Altaïr's first mistake, as this was the first tenet he broke. Stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent. The second tenet, Hide in plain sight, was broken when he arrogantly stormed into the temple, without caring for subtlety, and relying on brute force instead. The third and final tenet was broken by his failed attack on Robert de Sable and the consequences it brought: Never Compromise the Brotherhood. Altaïr protested when he was called a traitor, and even though Al Mualim showed his regrets towards him, he lethally stabbed Altaïr with his gold dagger.

To his surprise, Altaïr later found himself still alive in the library with his master. Al Mualim explained this was only what he wanted Altaïr to see, using the Apple to create the illusion of Altaïr's execution. He received another lecture concerning what the Assassins are fighting for, which is peace. Altaïr still did not understand what he had done wrong in that aspect, due to his arrogance and overconfidence. The meaning of the words 'Nothing is true, everything is permitted' were misunderstood by him, according to his master, who felt Altaïr was not wise enough to understand. Later he revealed to Altaïr that Malik still held the same anger as he did before, and truly wanted Altaïr dead for the responsibility of his brother's death. Altaïr at that point was not really touched by this; however what affected him was his demotion to a pupil, which humiliated him deeply. Altaïr did not see the point of this, but eventually had to accept what his master desired. Al Mualim explained to Altaïr that someone had betrayed the brotherhood, and his first task as a pupil was to hunt this traitor down, unarmed.

After rediscovering the techniques used by the brotherhood to obtain information (eavesdropping on citizens, theft of important documents, and threatening town criers who speak for the target) Altaïr found the traitor and brought him before Al Mualim, who executed the man with a plain sword that he then gave to Altaïr as his first promotion past novice-hood. Altaïr was soon lectured by his master and told of his mission to reclaim his former honor. He was to assassinate nine important leaders of the Templar, but now he must also seek them out and discover information on when to strike (work that was previously done by informants before Altaïr ever arrived for the kill). This begins Altaïr's Hunt for the Nine as he rides to Damascus for the beginning of his epic journey of discovery.
