Theater of Dionysos

The Theater of Dionysos was a major theater located at the foot of the Athenian Akropolis in Athens, Greece. Dedicated to the Greek god of wine, grapes and theater, Dionysus, the theater introduced Greek theater to the heart of the city.

The theater was also known for hosting the performances of works written by famous tragedians such as Euripides, Aischylos, Aristophanes and Sophokles.[1]

History

During the Peloponnesian War, the theater was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra.[1]

Around 424 BCE, Aristophanes' play, The Knights was performed here after Kassandra ensured his lead actor, Thespis would show up. Thespis was held by Andras and his group of guards sent by Commander Rhexenor, a Cultist of the Delian League branch. The play was also seen by Kleon, the acting leader of Athens, though he left in the middle of it.[2]
